Ironically, the 8th Illinois! They're a great bunch, but sadly I almost never make it to the CW reenactments due to my Roman focus, which reaches neurotic proportions at times. But I think all periods of reenacting add a little something, make you more well-rounded. In the case of CW, you've got the enemy... and lots of them! Most Romans will agree that there simply isn't the opportunity for "enemy" interaction most of the time. I was lucky enough to attend the Lafe, Ark. fort battle last year, and that was probably the one exception. I also dig the cavalry aspect of CW... one of my goals is to attend Gettysburg or Red River as a mounted trooper.

Here's my full kit. I portray a fresh fish from a well-to-do family, hence my rather flamboyant appearance:


Using the leather-working skills I acquired making my Roman kit, I made my own belt, holster, carbine sling, gauntlet cuffs, and heavily modified my shell jacket to look more like what I've seen in period tintypes. And that's an area where Roman surpasses all other time frames of reenacting: it teaches you to make stuff. Invaluable skills.
