new recruit - Paullus Scipio - 04-25-2007

For Robert : I was aware I needed to include my real name...and I did !! (read the first line).I didn't repeat my name in the signature line because it would have been redundant to do so, but I will in future. What do you mean by "update my profile" ?

regards, Paullus Scipio ( Paul McDonnell-Staff

Re: New recruits - Robert Vermaat - 04-25-2007

Hi Paul,

I sent you a PM.

Re: New recruits - Paullus Scipio - 04-25-2007

D..oh !!

O.K.....found the profiles section and duly completed it....no need to reply,Robert !

Takes a while for us new tiros to learn "hay foot" from "straw foot" ( old drill sergeant's way of teaching country hicks, who didn't know left from right, to march.......tie a piece of each to the appropriate foot !! )

Re: New recruits - philsidnell - 04-26-2007

The Kate Gilliver? We should talk. I am a commissioning editor specialising in ancient military history and I need some authors who know their Romans.

Quote:The Kate Gilliver?

she is indeed a member of RAT.

Re: New recruits - philsidnell - 04-27-2007

Sorry, should have introduced myself to everyone sooner. I'm 36, from Kent in the UK. Always been fascinated by military history and for the last 16 years or so in ancient warfare in particular, admittedly leaning more toward Greek/Hellenistic than Roman. I am a keen wargamer (though I am on the longest losing streak ever!). I do not currently reenact (though I dabbled with a Napoleonic group when I was much younger) but would if I could find the time and money. If I did it would ideally be in a cavalry unit - Alexander's companions would be the ultimate - having always been fascinated by horses. My family think I am obsessed, just because I named my son Alexander.

I am now lucky enough to make a living from my interests, having recently been employed as a commissioning editor by a military publisher looking to expand their coverage of ancient warfare. I have had one book published, on cavalry in ancient warfare and am currently researching a second on the Battle of Leuctra so I may be picking a few brains on that(neither are for the publisher I now work for). I must say it is very refreshing to be able to chat to like-minded people who are genuinely interested in the same things. Really looking forward to learning a lot from you all, especially the reenactors among you with the hands-on experience of handling weapons etc.

'it is more effective to have half as many infantry as the enemy and an overwhelming superiority in cavalry than to engage him with absolutely equal numbers' - Polybius, drawing the lessons of the Battle of Cannae.

Re: New recruits - Paullus Scipio - 04-30-2007

Hi Phil !!

I have some considerable experience in writing both articles and books on ancient military subjects, especially Roman, and would be most interested in doing more - I also have a friend who is an excellent illustrator ( though now semi-retired), who might be willing to assist !!

Please, see my introductory post on this thread - perhaps we should get in touch privately, rather than use this thread ???

Re: New recruits - KeeferD - 04-30-2007

Salvete!

My name is Keefer Dunn and I am but a humble high-schooler.

I've been studying Latin for a meager 4 semesters now, and am currently studying Catullus, and Ovid. I've been trying to convince my teacher to teach a Cicero and Tacitus class but thus far i haven't been very successful.

Anywho, I'm very interested in Roman Military History, and though i might not be as well versed as most of you, i still know my stuff. I joined RAT to learn even more, and I hope to soon be involved in reenactment.

Re: New recruits - Titus Publius Saturninus - 04-30-2007

Hi Keefer a very big WELCOME from one newbee to the next. I can assure you I don't know a darn thing about my own history or at least very little .

You sound like a VERY sentient and much together young man with great goals and it is both an honor and a pleasure meeting you here. Straight arrow Keefer it sounds like you are going places in your life. I wish you all the very best life has to offer.

Cheers!

Titus

Re: New recruits - RobHarbottle - 05-06-2007

Greetings all,

I'm new to this forum and have joined after having friends and fellow re-enactors rave about it. Gotta say, it's the best thing I've come across in a long while, well done to all.

And after such brazen complements, allow me to introduce myself. I'm Rob Harbottle, 34 years young, I've re-enacted for 18 years, 6 doing Roman. I occasionally turn out with the Colchester Roman Society. I'm a saddler who also produces leather goods for museums and I'm very good at starting projects but not at finishing them (when it comes to my own anyway), so I'm looking for loads of motivation and inspiration.

Looking forward to chatting,

Rob.

Re: New recruits - Jeroen Pelgrom - 05-06-2007
