banded helmets of the 5th century question (finished St. Vid - Chuck Russell - 09-08-2007 http://www.royalathena.com/PAGES/romanc ... HMS25.html Sveti Vid helmet example are there any more examples like this 2 banded helmet? are there any references to cheek plates or neck guards? Re: banded helmets of the 5th century question - martijn.wijnhoven - 09-08-2007 Quote:Sveti Vid helmet example The book Spangenhelme. Baldenheim und Verwandte Typen by Mahand Vogt contains a catalogue of spangenhelms and related types of helmets (as suggested by the title). The writer dedicates a section of this catalogue to these banded helmets and comes up with the following specimens: 1) St. Vid/Narona III 2) St. Vid/Narona IV 3) A helmet of unknown origen in an unknown collection (the source stated here is: Hermann Historica München. 1 Katalog zur 43. Alte Waffen. Antiken. Jagdliches. Varia. 16. Oktober 2002, Losnummer 1200. It was sold for 11.000 Euro). 4) Bretzenheim (Germany) 5) Voivoda (Bulgaria) None of these artefacts were found with a neck or cheek guard. Best wishes, Martijn PS: Are you considering making one? Re: banded helmets of the 5th century question (finished St. Vid - Robert Vermaat - 09-08-2007 Sure. Some are dated to the early medieval period though, like 9th-10th c. Re: banded helmets of the 5th century question (finished St. Vid - Robert Vermaat - 09-08-2007 This one is from the 6th c.: Re: banded helmets of the 5th century question - Chuck Russell - 09-08-2007 Quote:Martijnfarm2.static.flickr.com/1062/1346868351_5233e5a9ee_o.jpg oooo, i dunno. i was tinkerin in the shop today Re: banded helmets of the 5th century question (finished St. Vid - Gaius Julius Caesar - 09-08-2007 Are you planing on doing brain surgery? hock: Re: banded helmets of the 5th century question (finished St. Vid - martijn.wijnhoven - 09-08-2007 I am curious how your helmet will turn out. BTW of those 5 helmets mentioned by Mahand Vogt, only the first 3 are made out of 2 parts connected by a middle band running from the back of the head to the front (thus consisting of two "fillers"). The other 2 specimens seem to have an additional band running from the one side of the head to the other (and therefore containing 4 "fillers"). Gook luck with the helmet and post some pictures when ready. Cheers, Martijn Re: banded helmets of the 5th century question (finished St. Vid - Gaius Julius Caesar - 09-08-2007 Is that bronze your using for the bowl halves? Re: banded helmets of the 5th century question (finished St. Vid - Chuck Russell - 09-08-2007 no sorry. the band metal i have is galv so i have to strip it when i'm done. the bowls are just mild steel. its all i had in that length for the brow band. i'm working on the center band now. There are quite a few of these simple iron caps - some are a little more complex than others. The Herman Historica catalogues show at least three - attributed to eastern Europe 5th to 6th centuries. The Bremen-Focker helm is another spiky one. The Mahand Vogt book is excellent, by the way. The fold out at the end show constructional details on 22 spangenhelmes. Paul Re: banded helmets of the 5th century question (finished St. Vid - Chuck Russell - 09-09-2007 thanks for that bit of info. the spikes are just there to hold the band and the helm halves together. i just cleaned my shop so i couldnt find enough bolts with matching nuts so i used the spikes that had a screw backing. any where online i can get ahold of these titles you posted about? Re: banded helmets of the 5th century question (finished St. Vid - Redwald - 09-09-2007 http://www.antikmakler.de/catalog/produ ... s_id/10872 It is a bit expensive -- but there is nothing else quite like it -- it helps to speak German but the pictures are superb! Paul Re: banded helmets of the 5th century question (finished St. Vid - Chuck Russell - 01-16-2008 well its done. i just have to add a liner to it. here's to finishing my 5thc Frankish kit this summer!! |
