Roman Hammers - Primvs Pavlvs - 10-15-2007

Looking for an image of a all purpose Roman hammer. I prefer something from the 1st century. I think it would be nice to actually have a reproduction hammer in camp.

Re: Roman Hammers - Caius Fabius - 10-15-2007

A lot of hand tools here:

At the bottom of the page, you will seee some hammers drawings:

You can see, there are very similar to actual examples.

Re: Roman Hammers - Primvs Pavlvs - 10-15-2007

Thanks Guys!

Adrian I think I will tackle this one myself. Shipping a 2k hammer from the UK would cost more than production!

hand made from billets - richsc - 10-15-2007

I all Roman hammers were forged from iron billets. Metalsmiths and armorers still do that today if they want a speciality hammer. The more uneven it looks the more accurate.

Always interesting:

Re: Roman Hammers - Marcus Mummius - 10-16-2007

How much would such a hammer cost Adrian? Are there also any Roman ball peen hammers known?

Vale,

Re: Roman Hammers - LUCIUS ALFENUS AVITIANUS - 10-16-2007

Yes. The ball hammer is know yet by the egipcians. There are a egiptina goldsmith's ball hammer, made in stone.

The ball it's not so marked, it's a rounded ending of the square body of the hammer.

I'm also interested in repros of roman tools, like saw, hammers, etc.

Re: Roman Hammers - M. Demetrius - 10-16-2007

Saws. Now there's something. What would a basic carpenter shop saw have looked like? A wood frame saw like what's called a "buck saw" in the US?

Re: Roman Hammers - Gaius Julius Caesar - 10-16-2007

I think there is one at Corbridge, if my memory serves me well.... :?

Re: Roman Hammers - Peroni - 10-16-2007

There are sculptures that feature frame saws, as well as the traditional handsaw.

There are some nice hammers from Richborough and from a relatively unknown iron hoard from Worlington. (Now kept in the bowels of the Cambridge University Museum).
