Scythian Armour - Syr Ateas - 12-06-2007 At the suggestion of Paullus Scipio I have started a new thread to discuss and share information about Scythian armour. To start the ball rolling I have posted some pictures of armour excavated between the 1980's to 1990's. If you have photos that would greatly benefit readers of this thread please please post them here. I don't have too many armour items as that isn't my main focus so I would love to see what you have lurking on your machines  Re: Scythian Armour - Syr Ateas - 12-06-2007 Some more now... Re: Scythian Armour - Syr Ateas - 12-06-2007 Quote:I'm very familiar with those 3 pictures, I have them one my files for a year or more...Please feel free to post some of your file photos! This thread is here for the purpose of 'show and tell', and I hope to encourage others to show off their file photos. The more the merrier Re: Scythian Armour - Giannis K. Hoplite - 12-07-2007 Same armour as above. Khairete Giannis Re: Scythian Armour - Gaius Julius Caesar - 12-07-2007 What is that shield looking screen attached to his elbows across his back!? Perhaps the slot is to fit over his kontos/lance? Re: Scythian Armour - Syr Ateas - 12-07-2007 Hi there Gaius Julius Caesar That shield is currently in a series of hot debates within Russian academia as there isnt enough evidence as yet to establish if they were carried like this all the time during combat (perhaps on horseback), if he was simply just buried like this or if this was the way the shield was carried when not in use. Ethnographic photos of Siberian tribes - I believe one is posted on this site somewhere - show that they were carried like this. Its one of those things that would benefit from a reproduction to be made and then a spot of experimental archaeology with reenactors could find the answer. At the moment the consensus is that the slot is for hand to hand combat, but again I would like to see some experiments carried out between a Scythian and some Hoplites to see if this would work hock: Any volunteers?  Re: Scythian Armour - Igor_Dzis - 12-07-2007 The Scythian helmets: http://annals.xlegio.ru/skif/chernenk/sd03.htm The Scythian body armour: http://annals.xlegio.ru/skif/chernenk/sd01.htm The baze link: http://annals.xlegio.ru/skif/chernenk/c ... .htm#armor Re: Scythian Armour - MeinPanzer - 12-08-2007 Quote:Hi there Gaius Julius Caesar I think it's pretty clear that they were worn like that in combat, as we have the Solokha comb to provide us with about a clear an example as we could ever wish to get. The only mystery is, as you say, just how it was attached. Re: Scythian Armour - bachmat66 - 12-08-2007 Quote:The Scythian helmets: Igor, super thanks! how about any Saka from Pazyryk or Issyk? especially horse equipment -saddles, bridles etc.. do you have any links to such material? спасибо Re: Scythian Armour - Gaius Julius Caesar - 12-09-2007 Quote:Syr Ateas:lemmlg8o Wrote:Hi there Gaius Julius Caesar if it was the image I am thinking of in the links posted by igor, they looked pretty confusing for that to be certain in my mind. There looked like the one guy had at least three of these screen/shields around him.... :? shock: one looked like it was strapped to his back as in the reconstruction, but then another was in front, and another just seems to be there.... :? Great links by the way Igor! @ Marika, it would be an interesting project to recreate that suit, but I am already bogged down in the Roman era!
