Beaded Necklaces? Update: 1st attempt - help! :o) - Libitina - 02-01-2008

Hello

Bit of a silly question.. but I've been reading up a bit on Roman jewellery and considering having a go at making some.

I know it sounds daft but the simpler beaded jewellery - what type of material would it have been strung on?!

Nowadays we can use metal wire, string, cord etc but does anyone know what would have been more authentic?

Thanks so much

I have to look in my books but I think they used some kind of metal wire.

I think that natural fibres certainly were used since many finds only show the beads, indicating that there was a cord that has perished rather than bronze/silver or gold wire.
I'd also say that this relatees to the personality itself, lower ranks of course using cheaper materials, and what could be cheaper than a bit of wool/linen/etc. string?

Wow quick replies as ever, thanks.

Can't believe I didn't think of wool, so obvious! Plus very cheap for me to mess about with.

How about sinew? Its much stronger than any other natural fiber that I know of. I have sewn 18th century moccasins with deer sinew and it outlasted the leather Confusedhock:

I use a strong waxed linen, or as a substitute for sinew, dental floss!

Re: Beaded Necklaces? Update: 1st attempt - help! :o) - Franklin - 02-01-2008

Glad to know I'm not the only one fudging with dental floss. I've used it on a number of projects where I need something finer than sinew but tougher than thread.

Thanks again!

I'm guessing not the minty variety I already have Big Grin

Please be gentle with me, I'm not a jewellery expert! Big Grin

The craft shop didn't have much choice of beads but I got some glass ones. Is this too much? Would they have been more subtle/plainer?

Have tried looking up more info but there seems to be so much variety that I'm stumped as to what would be authentic! I know it was common to have matching sets.

Looks nice! Are you going to try Jet too!

Nice!

If you want to make some "less perfect" beads, you can use a small torch and heat them carefully over a refractary brick, until there get a red colour. Then, let to cool slowly.

If your shop have glass beads not transparent, probably will be better.

Re: Beaded Necklaces? Update: 1st attempt - help! :o) - Libitina - 02-04-2008

Thanks I know what you mean. I wasn't keen on the transparent ones so will look online for better beads when I have some money and can change that.

I like the look of jet so want to do something with it. I saw someone made a jet ring on here but that's way beyond my skills
