Venturing oop North (England) - Libitina - 02-08-2008

Howdy

Next month I'm spending one night around Leicester and two just outside York.

Can anyone recommend any must-sees or must-dos in those areas or the journeys inbetween? Historical, Roman or otherwise.

Thank you! Big Grin

York Minster, york museum, York...... Tongue

there is a Roman town not far out of York heading NNW, can't recall the name of the place offhand, and it was closed both times I stopped. :?

Bosworth battlefield is worth visiting if you're near there (Warks/ Leicester area). They have just opened their new visitor centre, the old one was pretty impressive, so this one should be good if you're feeling a bit medieval.
York- Wonderful place, Clifford's tower, Yorkminster, the Roman bathhouse (with added bonus of a pub on top of it Big Grin ). I visited the Constantine exhibition at the museum last time I was there (2006)- there was a great display of Late Roman artifacts. Finished now though
The whole area is steeped in history. If you're around Wakefield, you could visit Sandal Castle, they often have displays there, usually medieval (wars of the roses) though rather than Roman.
Hope this helped.

I'll tell you what Kat, should you decide to travel just another two counties further North. Then you will arrive in Gods country, this is where the Romans came found it so wonderfull they built a Wall here and stayed for three hundred years. Then so I've been told the night life of Newcastle upon Tyne is the greatest in the Country, and also of course its the county with more Castles than any other in England.

Hello Brian, do you check your PM's?

Re: Venturing oop North (England) - Libitina - 02-11-2008

Thanks for the suggestions, shall have a look into them. Won't make it that far up this time Brian, but I will one day!

Re: Venturing oop North (England) - Peroni - 02-11-2008

Go to the Yorkshire museum and Gardens. They have a lovely collection of Roman artefacts especially the Whitby jet work. Last time I was there they were doing some live archaeology nearby too.

Also well worth a visit are the remains of the baths. These are located underneath a pub (which is very handy!)

Go to the Yorvik Viking centre too!

Re: Venturing oop North (England) - Memmia - 02-11-2008

It's a pity you're not in York sooner as the Viking festival is currently taking place.

York is now full of hairy, horny men going berserk, raping and pillaging....

....The Vikings have been doing some displays too

I'll add it to my diary for next year Big Grin

Kate,
I've PM'd you.

Re: Venturing oop North (England) - Viventius - 02-12-2008

I think Gaius is referring to Aldeborough, which is definitely worth a visit, if you're in the York area:

Unfortunately, the dig inside the Walls, mentioned by Peroni, finished a couple of years ago, though I hear the excavator may return at some point to delve around the walls again. But you're unlikely to miss the Multangular Tower as you make your way through the Gardens to the Yorkshire Museum.

For the Roman remains in the Minster ( http://www.yorkminster.org/visiting/what-to-see-and-do/ ) you need to go into the Undercroft. There's also the pillar from the Roman Headquarters, that's been put up outside the Minster. btw, the pillar is upside down!

If you like Roman ghost stories, go to the Treasurer's House ( http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w- ... houseyork/ ) and catch a tour into the cellar where Harry Martindale saw the Roman soldiers ...

If you're in a car, you could go out to Murton Park and see their reconstructed Roman fort. It's rather modest, but worth a look anyway: http://www.murtonpark.co.uk/

Have fun!

When does this finish? I am planning on heading to York later in the week.
Hopefully will make it here! Have to meet Cezary for some material!
