Literary evidence for army deployment - LegioIIavg - 05-06-2008
Hi everyone. I was just looking around gary bruegemann's site and reading his thoughts on whether the army fought in checker board formation or as connolly suggests utilised it only to swap out front line for fresh troops.
This got me wondering what specific ( if any ) historical evidence there was regarding this issue or is it largely a matter of conjecture.
I have no reenactment experience which might provide some insight into the question but I personally can't see how you would fight with these gaps in place. I did a search where I read someone with reenactment experience saying that the gaps are no problem as they create a killing box but would not the roman formations also be in such a killing box as they would obviously have enemy to their front and both flanks as well.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
