I'm sure it's awful.

What has happened with the great shield of Athena? Any progress to the finished item?

Re: Turned Aspis Project in Progress - Athena Areias - 09-20-2008

Nope. Still working on it. I'm sewing the leather rim cover to the inside leather covering. It takes a whole Steelers game to sew 10 inches (25cm). The porpax is done. The rest of the hardware is waiting for autumn smithing weather - too d@mn hot to beat metal in the summer, here. The outside leather cover is cut but has to wait until the hardware is done and mounted. No mounting of hardware until the inside is painted and sealed. No painting until the leather is sewn. No sewing until the garden chores are done - this was a "winter project" for a reason.

It's taking far longer than I ever imagined. The money I was saving for the next bronze purchase (the exterior rim) is being diverted to physical therapy on my back (is sucks getting old). I'll get there - it's just taking forever!!

Well,I haven't PMed anyone about the finished aspis of Athena,so I know nothing of how the project evolved.

Oh,that's good news,Chery!!! Would any photos be easy to be taken at this stage? I'd love to see how the inner leather lining is being glued and sewn in place, and also the porpax!!!

I'll try to get photos in the next couple of weeks. We just had a death in the family this AM. Things just sort of blew up today. I was just checking e-mails and forums before we all have to travel and do family stuff. Later, 'gators...

OK. I'm back and have a few pics to share. I'm not a very good leather sewing person. My porpax will have to wait. I want to smooth some dings (from my lack of skills) from it. It looks like Hephaestus was on a bender while metalworking. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Re: Turned Aspis Project in Progress - Giannis K. Hoplite - 01-07-2009

Very great work,i keep my laudes for when the paintwork will be finished in a bit. Congratulations! It reminds me of the Nashville Athena shield. Is it inspired by that?

Yes! I'm following that interior design. I think it's wonderful. I will have to memorize who is who in case someone asks me about the gigantomachy.

Re: Turned Aspis Project in Progress - Kallimachos - 01-07-2009
