5th century Gothic or Vandal tribesman serving in the Roman army. Diamond pattern trim in these photos is modern upholstery fabric, but I met a woman at this event who does handwoven diamond-twill wool. She'll be supplying the trim for the ultra-period version of this outfit. Squamata is my own creation, constructed from Deepeeka scales. Boots from Armamentaria, modified by me for my 1.5" leg difference. Also added hobnails. Pilleus is a vintage 1950's woman's pill-box hat I found on Ebay for $12. I want to eventually go to a spangen helm with punch decoration and repousse and a planked dished round shield.

Time yes, money no. Spent it all on kit, none left over for travel to the Netherlands!

Actually nothing in this kit is terribly expensive, just labor intensive. The scales themselves were cheap.

I need to take some pics with just the subarmalis underneath. It's as impressive and took as much time to hand stitch as the squamata.

Here is my impression of Marcomanian germanic warrior from second half of 2 century a. d. Our group Marcomania is from Czech Republic, so we are reconstructing Marcomanian tribe from our area. These photo was taken on Gladius 2010 event in open air museum Curia Vítkov near Liberec in Czech Republic.

Although the lady in question is indeed talented with embroifery , the amazing think is tthese examplers where Signy's first attempt at using the period drop loom!

Very nice work.
We did a 'fleece to finished' experiment once, to produce a full width piece of textile on one of our WW looms and found the most time consuming bit was spinning out the yarn. To make a piece 6 foot wide by 8 foot long took a mile of drop spun yarn.

Our Germanic group Marcomannia on Festival of Celtic culture in Nasavrky - Czech Republic. We have "summer equipment" without woollen tunics and cloaks. We were together with Romans, becuase there were a lot of Celts.
