Wax the entire subarmalis? Might be like wearing a plastic sack!

The subarmalis if made of cloth wicks sweat away from the body thus cooling the body! Seal the cloth with wax or oils and that cooling effect is gone.

Either way, try using what's called a glover's needle. They're very sharp, and have a triangular blade that will cut its way through felt, layers of cloth, leather, and yes, your finger! Available in several sizes, for anything from thin leather to belt leather, these are my needle of choice when sewing anything that's thick or resistant to the ordinary round needles.

There is a law about their use, however: when you pierce your finger, you must mark your project somewhere with a drop of your own blood. Don't know why, it's just the law. :wink: :lol: Might as well be, because if you stick yourself, you're probably touching the fabric anyway. When people ask "What's that brown spot?" just tell them you were obeying the Glover's First Law, and look very intelligent and Gnostic. :roll:

Just the outer layer, especially the shoulders.....the torso you can leave, if you need the cooling factor. Personally, up in these parts, you'll end up wet one way or he other, and still catch cold, sweating your ears off, so it makes no odds.

But yes, in a hamata in ther heat is good to wick away, a seg just traps it anyway.

Here is my subarmalis and my leather vest:

The subarmalis is made from four layers of linen (two on the outside, two on the inside) and three layers of thick wool. Pteryges are linen strips folded and sewn so that each pteryge has four layers. The body part is quilted. The subarmalis has fastenings on both sides, so when you unfasten it you can use it to sleep on (it is about 1.5 m long).

I think that this subarmalis could be used in a real battle 8) (of course, we fight with blunt weapons, although steel ones; we want some safety after all).

My leather vest was made by a local leatherworker, and it was a bit more expensive, considering how small it is (6000 CZK, that is approximately 330 USD). But it was made to measure, and it works really great. Nevertheles, I look (and feel) like a snowman when I wear it all Smile

Till Tuesday the 16th I'm having exams, so I haven't got much time to work on it. But you're right, I should do a little update, I still have some pictures. I have already made shoulder pieces and extra padding (to flatten the shoulderprofile) and I've worked on the quilting.

That padding will have a decorative extra, by which I mean there will be long shoulderpieces, like the reinforcements on a hamata or on a linothorax. Probably I'm going to sew some figure on it (not "on top of it", but the lines of the image are just the thread itself). I was thinking of an eagle on the left and a depiction of Mars on the right.

Does anyone have any good pictures on which I can base those useless but still hopefully good looking sewings? :lol:

Here is my subarmalis in progress. (At DSC) It has been tailored to fit beneath my squamata.

It is felted wool/linen construction. It will use small bronze toggle buttons of the type found at Chester (Diva) as the closure fasteners.
(unsure what colour to dye it yet!)
