Problem With Deepeka Pompeii Gladius (AH4211N) - Lucius Duccius Rufinus - 01-12-2009
Might not be in the right forum or not... but i just purchased this item, along with a few other deepeka items, they're all great except for the Pompeii gladius.. It looks great dont get me wrong, but i cant get the sword to fully sheath... there is about an inch and a half of blade sticking out of the scabbard.. am i missing something here? has anyone experience similar problems? and is there and easy fix rather than returning the item?

Sometimes removing a little of the leather at the scabbard mouth helps.
Somtimes, simply reversing the blade helps too.
Have you tried WD40 inside the scabbard?

Never heard of this issue, which is strange anyway. Are you sure there isn't anything in the scabbart that shouldn't be there and so blocked the sword?

I've not really look at the bottom of it, it just feels like the sword is bigger than the Sheath...
i havent tried really shoving it hard down.. incase i rip the leather...
Might try a bit of WD40 see what happens!

Taking out a piece of leather at the scabbard mouth, like Adrian suggests might help. These days deepeeka gladii and pugiones are extremely tight in their scabbards. You sometimes come close to needing two men to pull out the weapon... This used to be not the case with the older versions, I wonder what the reason is...

You indeed need two men to pull out my Delos sword. Still have to fix that.

My deepeeka mainz had a loose pieceof leather which was constantly
causing problems, until it came away. Perhaps a similar piece has pushed down on yours?

I have also noticed this with some Deepeeka swords. The wood can sometimes warp if it has been stored either in a too dry, or too damp environment. I had a Pompei style gladius from Deepeeka once that warped so much, that I had to take it apart, and carve out the inside.

I know this problem too with several swords. My simpel and not such a rough methode like it seems at first: I always take a chisel and a hammer (hammering carefuly). Take first a more little one then always a little bit thicker. Works very well!!!!! Never had any problems since then (and do not need two persons to pull out the swords anymore :-) ) )

There may be a brass nail or two that is holding the chape in at the bottom of the scabbard sticking through into the inside of the scabbard and preventing the sword from seating.
could also be leather...Although I don't know why they continue to put leather inside the scabbard, is it really nessesary? I don't recall leather inside being supported by surviving evidence?

A variation of the chisel and hamer tecnich, is to use a plain section rasp or file. Problem is that need to be long enough to reach inside the scabbard without dissasembly. If the trouble is in the point zone of the scabbard, probably you can't reach.
The trouble with oiling the scabbard is that the wood could "inflates" with the absortion of the oil, making more dificult the blade moving. Probably some of the troubles in that sense are produced by the oiling of the blades made in India for preserving the blades of rusting.
Regarding the interior leathering of the scabbards, i don't konw if roman does, but i think there are some medieval/viking swords with internal leathering.

I have had the same problem with Deepeeka spatha. They make the sword and scabbard separatly and do not check for fit. Most sloppy. So in the end I did take the rasp to the mouth and solved most of the problem. It still sticks, but not nearly as bad. Turned out the blade was slightly warped. The sword Al Hamdd made me (Hamfelde Pompeji with a Nijmegen grip) was however spot on, so will have the next one done by them.
