Farewell Britannia by Simon Young - Caballo - 01-30-2009

I'd previously not bought this as I'd been put off by the cover and the rather childlike drawings.

Its actually very good indeed, and the author ( who has a doctorate and got a starred first from Cambridge in Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic) has rather brilliantly based these series of short stories on actual archaeological finds and literary excerpts. The central thread is a bit contrived- that these are all one family- but it works as a thread. Apparently there are unpublished bits on Magnus Maximum etc- more please!

Recommended.
