How do you mount your Phalerae? - QVINTVS ARTORIVS CORVINVS - 02-27-2009

I have in my possession a set of Len Morgan phalerae 8)
They are to be set into a "T" arrangement like Paul's post "Centurio Impression ( Arbeia 12 feb 2009 )".
Open to suggetions for the harness system (Which I have yet to construct) and proper ride-height on the chest as well as any other things I may have inadvertantly omitted

Thanks in advance,

Uber-Big thanks to Julius Verax from Legio VI who was a wealth of information on this Phalerae harness building project.
Knowing the width of Len Morgan's phalerae to be a hair under 4.5", the rest can be algebraically calculated out, which gives a pretty smack-on rendition.

Should have time to assemble the cut leathers this weekend.

Again, Paul... You da man :!:

Looks good Phil...the phalerae you bought had the little loops pre-attached on the back?

Re: How do you mount your Phalerae? - QVINTVS ARTORIVS CORVINVS - 03-02-2009

Yes,

Len had soldered the 4 (NESW) mounting loops onto the back of the phalerae... once they are spread out on the harness, you make an incision for the loops to pass through, then lock them in place there with some home-made cotter pin type things. This allows for a non-destructive removal for cleaning and whatnot.

I have the same phalerae and the leather harness is identical to yours. I mounted the phalerae differently though. Each disc is on a cross-section of the leather straps of the harness. I use a piece of lace for each phalera and pass it through the soldered on loops on the back to lace the disc to the harness. This way you don't have to cut into the leather. I don't have a picture of the back of my phalera set up... I hope you can understand what I mean?

Perhaps this explains better what I did. The red are the soldered on loops. The yellow is the leather lace I use to lace the phalerae onto the harness.

Vale,

Damn... that makes allot of sense too!

Not using the loops at all, but using the 4 holes in the back to lace them on...
Couldn't use the soldered in place laced loops as that would put my lions sideways

That reminds me. I started off with five of the concentric circle phalerae:

But I then replaced the central one by a lion's head. I had to cut slits for that one Smile

Using the holes is a good idea too!

I'll be wearing mine with a segmentata...was thinking of 3 on the bottom, 2 on top. Thoughts?

Re: How do you mount your Phalerae? - QVINTVS ARTORIVS CORVINVS - 03-03-2009

I am really fond of the "T"
Only Paul nailed the look before I did 8)

What are the phalerae by Len Morgan made of silver, silvered brass.....?

Tinned cupric alloy. Not like the originals but if you want phalerae that are made exactly made like the originals you should be prepared to pay about 500euro per disc. Cry

I have to say that they are extremely sweet, and I am lucky to own a set as well made as they are.
Public kudos/Laudes to Len and Elizabeth for the great products and wonderful communications.
I would highly recommend them.

Magnus. I don't want realy to be a killjoy but I do not think that you should wear Phalerae with a Segmantata.
Where ever we see these things being worn it is more times on chainmail but now and then on scale, indeed I can't recall ever seeing any depiction of these on segmentata.

Re: How do you mount your Phalerae? - Magnus - 03-05-2009

That's because there aren't any. But this has been discussed here before. There are a handful of depictions that show the centurionate with phalerae...a handful to represent how many?

M.C. Bishop even said "Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence" concerning this very topic.

To top it all off, I'm a centurion, and I'll wear what ever I want to wear...until I can afford a nice squamata anyway.
