\'Warriors\' on History Channel - Praefectusclassis - 04-07-2009

Did anybody see the first episodes on the History Channel? They came to this side of the pond for the Teutoburg forest. I see they had TimeTrotter perform and know that our own Christian Koepfer got to explain ancient shields.

Hey Jasper

I was a little disappointed by that episode. I do like the Green Beret guy and his take on weapons and their uses. When he tries a weapon, you can tell he knows what he’s doing and therefore can believe more of what he says about its feel and use. But out of the sixty minute show, only twenty talked about the massacre.

I did like them explaining how the battle transpired along different places until the main ambush, too many people say it took place at one spot and ended there all in one day. But they didn’t talk about the forts created each night, or how on at least one occasion the strategy used in breaking out of one. They didn’t talk about the empire coming back years later and talking to some tribesmen that told them what happened, or what the tribesmen did to Varus’s body. They didn’t talk about how a group of legionaries grouped together in the marsh and held their own for awhile.

They did say the cavalry, seeing there was know room for them to fight, fled. I thought they fled and escaped, but in this episode, they said they fled and were destroyed.

I did like them talking about the tribes weapons and how they were used, it gives you a better understand of how they fought during battle, but forty minutes given to that instead of the battle itself, well…I would have liked to see it the other way around.

I think if someone wanted to watch a sixty minute show about the Teutoburg forest, then they could find another program more informative.

There’s my two cents worth.

The US, generally.
I emailed the History Channel press agent and the episodes are actually online: http://www.history.com/content/warriors/warriors-video
Can't actually get the full episodes to work though... :?

Some less-than-enthusiastic reviews of the series here:

Just doesn't sound like something that makes me regret not having cable TV.

Hehee! Nice to put a face to the name Stefan. I have to say, I've seen MUCH worse, documentary wise. And Christian too!
