Try this:

Also a RAT search for scutum press will help, if you're planning on making a press.

They sell shield blanks

shield bosses:
Deepeeka (wholeseller, need to find a vendor like LaWren's Nest or Find-It-Armory)
AH6753 and AH6752B are good. Although the square boss is your best bet.

Most reenactment groups copy the dimensions of the scutum from Dura Europos (from the Simon James book):
Height: 1.06m
width around the curve: 0.86m
chord: 0.66m
thickness: 5-6mm

The usual modern method of construction involves gluing together two layers of 1/8 inch birch plywood on a wooden form. See the legio XX handbook for descriptions of presses.

It's been over 20 years since I took Trig and 15 since Calculus. Can radius be calculated by knowing length of chord and the length of the segment of circumference? I'm going to make a Scutum press using these dimensions.

Never mind, I used the numerical method in an excel spreadsheet to calculate radius and chord height. Then the dimensions needed (simplified to nearest 1/4") would be:

radius = 13 3/4"
chord height = 9 1/4"
plywood width = 34"
plywood height = 41 3/4"

Re: 1st century Scutum - Hibernicus - 06-14-2009

Are going to make a semi- cylindrical rectangle?

You could always make an historic replica.. lath strips...

Some also use 3 layers of luan for modern plywood versions.

"sagitta" is the measurement describing the depth of the curve. A sagitta is a portion of a radius

Chord is the distance between the ends of the arc of the curve.
