STAR TREK- worst movie EVER - Matt Lukes - 05-12-2009

Death to JJ Abrams- that's all I have to say. I want my $12 back and $10 Million in mental cruelty damages. Dear gods, I wasn't expecting much and I was SORELY disappointed- this is just a bad, bad movie. It's entertaining for those who aren't really Star Trek fans, like my girlfriend, but even she could understand why it wouldn't be liked by those who are. Not one redeeming factor... even the action was so ridiculously fast, with millisecond cuts and just so much crap on the screen at a time you can't see what's happening save exactly where you're looking, and as has been said before: someone PLEASE buy this boy a Steadicam!! Rotten, rotten, rotten... What well and truly bugs me most is not the complete violation- seen the South Park where the boys' friend is raped? LOL- but it could have been so exceptional given what can be done today, but the writing and design is just horriffically bad. If Star Trek V is a 1, this thing's a negative 10...

Re: STAR TREK- worst movie EVER - Paralus - 05-12-2009

I'd think that a bit harsh as far as criticism goes. It has its faults - a lull about two thirds through, a time travel that doesn't quite gel and "Scotty" travelling through cooler pipes for no good structural reason - but it does work. Indeed the staw poll, taken from geezers such as myself afterwards, was quite complimentary. They, like me, after a bottle of red could likely quote lines from the sixties series in the fashion that others (and myself) might also retail scenes from Monty Python.

Much of the "history" of Trek has been written by authors writing for the "novel franchise" after the death of the original series. Even so the movie franchise was quite dead: spitted on the sarissa of poor writing and lack of conviction (the death and "re-birth" of Data in the what was to be final installment prior to this "re-boot").

Personally, I think it nodded quite well to the motifs of the "holy church of Trek" whilst attempting to re-ignite the warp core of a future for the franchise. This film guarantees the availability of dilithium crystals for the franchise even if at the expense of re-writing the character's future - or history depending on the viewpoint.

For God's sake Jim! I'm a doctor not an elevator!

I'm going to see it tonight...and I liked Star Trek V...so I should be ok with this one. Big Grin

Re: STAR TREK- worst movie EVER - arklore70 - 05-12-2009

Well, I did go and see it and I liked it.

I grew up as a kid watching the originals and sitting through all the original crew movies as they were released. I am not sure if it is better than Wrath of Khan or the Quest for Peace, but I thought it was well made and was faithful to the original characters. Yes, the whole time space thing is a bit confusing to me, but then again my check book can be too at times. Confusedhock:

To me, its good enough to see a second time, and the last time I did that was for Lord of the Rings, which I know so many here either loved or hated.

Matt, if I see ya in in the next few months, I'll buy you the $12 bucks back in in drinks or lunch.

Re: STAR TREK- worst movie EVER - M. Demetrius - 05-13-2009

Here's all I really didn't like:
The design of the Romulan ship.
Making Romulans look like they did, with the tattoos etc.
The biz with Ohura and Spock.
The bad guys were just stupid sometimes.

I'd say more, but I'm not a spoiler.

Here's what I did like. Spock new looked a lot like the old Spock from TV. Kirk had the same kinds of mannerisms. Bones had some of the same looks at things, and was just as cranky. The guy in the red shirt got fried.

I'm sure there will be a sequel or two. Money is in that well, and they're going to pump it out.

Just what was that?? I mean, really, just what was that??

Evidently we will see more in future films going where no Vulcan has (publicly) gone before...

That was some of the stuff that worked well. The fellow who played Spock nailed it as did the bloke playing Bones. Poor ol' red shirts...

For God's sake Jim! I'm a doctor not a bricklayer!

I gotta admit, I laughed out loud, and clapped. I mean, I knew it was coming, because it just HAD to happen.

Re: STAR TREK- worst movie EVER - Paralus - 05-13-2009

Yes I too had a few good chuckles and a laugh at "bones": For God's sake, I'm a doctor not a physicist!

The children loved Kirk's response to Spock on the ice-world "bulls**t!"

Given the Spock / Uhura thingy, I can now visualise the reasons for her reponse to Sulu in the original series when he charges onto the bridge, sword in hand, and tells her: "I'll protect you, fair maiden!" To which she deadpans: "Sorry Mr Sulu, neither".

Re: STAR TREK- worst movie EVER - M. Demetrius - 05-13-2009

The monsters on the Ice World were a lot better in this movie than the original series, although that white gorilla thing with the spikes on his back, that was pretty high terror, you know?

What the heck was that red thing, anyway? Besides powerful and hungry, I mean.

I have no bloody idea but I saw it again the following day at the brother-in-law's house just as we neared the end of the third bottle of shiraz. Only for a moment mind you...a fleeting glimpse...I'm sure I saw it....

Perhaps I'll ring Gary and check if he saw it and does he know what it is???

Re: STAR TREK- worst movie EVER - Magnus - 05-13-2009

I thought it was great...dialogue was fantastic, special effects were great...looking forward to the next one.

Re: STAR TREK- worst movie EVER - Paullus Scipio - 05-13-2009

Gotta agree with all the above......"Romulans" were crap ( I liked the original concept of them as 'honourable' foes with Klingons as the arrogant bad guys - reversed subsequently in the 'Star Trek Universe'.....even if the script for the first episode we see them in was stolen from that movie about an American destroyer v U-Boat, with Curt Jurgens as the U-boat Captain....)
"Olsen - Can't wait to get a crack at those Romulans and kick ass" in the red space-suit was a nice "in joke" for aficionados - and there were many more! Smile
Lotsa creeky plot premises ( e.g.the 'Enterprise' takes minutes to get from Earth to Vulcan at Warp speed; the Romulan ship of 'Nero', said to be faster, takes hours/days on the reverse journey - just how long did Pike hold out?) Is anyone anal enough, like me, to own the books that trace all the plot faults/goofs?
Didn't like the Romulan mining ship.....too many things wrong to go into here, not least its size....
The whole Uhura/Spock thing (no explanation, obviously just a set-up for sequels.....anyone want to bet on an ' Uhura in danger/Spock on the horns of a logic/emotion dilemma' plot twist?)
The whole 'alternate universe' thing was clever - keep the characters without being bound by the old 'premises'.....does anyone remember the great episode where this was done with a plot-line about an 'evil' piratical crew in an alternate universe? Now there was a plot-line I wish they'd pursued...could even have been a spin-off series! ........

Yep. If you think about it, an Evil Spock supported by an Evil Scotty and Evil Kirk is quite a formidable enemy task force...but I wouldn't worry so much about their Evil Red Shirts, either. 8)

I think they felt obliged to "modernize" the look of the Romulans, for reasons not clearly explained. But the Romulan (*utterly huge*) vessel wasn't really like the Romulan warcraft (which were arguably the coolest looking of all the original spaceships). It reminded me more of Nemo's Nautilus in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, blended with that backwards-swimming gigantic squid. Nice to see the extra shooting tools on the Enterprise all firing off at once. Yeah! "Fire everything". Cool understated command.

And a good episode it was - even if using (the later - introduced in Journey to Babel) Sarek for the the Romulan.

Yes. No more need be said.

Mirror, Mirror if I recall. A neat plotline that.

Do you recall the episode where a former Starfleet captian was the Roman emporer on a planet where Rome, seemingly, never fell? Telecast galdiatorial games et al? Not to mention Romulan society....

You need to address Hydaspes "old Man".
