1st Century Germanic Shield Boss - madoc - 06-07-2009
I need a 1st century shield boss urgently.
I've not got any specific books but have found some resources on the web (and on this forum).
However, the pointy ones all have a long lead time (like a month or two) and I was hoping to get the shield made (it's a present) quite quickly.
These guys, in my country, have a carinated boss:

It says " Important note! -Our shield bosses, nails and helmets are manufactured exclusively on order. Depending on order situation a longer delivery time is possible (approx. 8 weeks at the time). "
That's why I assumed I'd have to wait.
By the time I've got the boss (shipped from Germany to the UK), made the shiel etc , then the summer will be over.

I know, but sometimes they have some ready made in stock. That's why I suggested it. It wouldn't hurt you to send them an email to ask. But hey, that's just my opinion.
Don't you put on the boss after you made the shield? That's the way we always do it. First we complete the shield and as the last step we put on the boss.

oh yes.
But, making the shield up is only a matter of hours (even with sewing all the edging on).
The painted design always takes the most time........
I already wrote to every place, in europe, that had anything on the internet...... I was really after advice on the boss that jelling dragon has ..

The shield boss that Rob has , Jelling Dragon, is being sold as Early Germanic.
How Early Germanic is hard to say because there is no reference to the original.
It's is only 1mm thick, so I would not advise it for fighting.

Someone gave me such a shield boss as a present some 8 years ago.
Never put it on shield.

This is probably the best place to ask this.
I'm wondering how Germanic shields were held, whether they had a "Roman" grip or a "Viking" grip, Horizontal or Vertical? Just wondering. :mrgreen:

The Jelling carniated boss is neither fish nor fowl, not suitable for either early Germanic or Migration period in my opinion...and they crumple under heavy impact.
Aren't all 1st C German ones pointy cones with a flange?
I'm sure I've seen reports on some of them that show that some were made by 'just' rolling a sheet into a seamed cone and then hammering out a flange? Best option might be to talk to someone like Chris Anson or Roly's/Dreadnought's pet Forest of Dean blacksmith, Steve, to see if they could knock you one up quickly enough.

Domed and Pointed were both in use next to each other within the roman empire.

Although their pointed one (Product No.: 1451) is based on a later example, it's similar (not exactly the same, however) to one of the 1st century shield bosses from Kessel-lith (The Netherlands). But yeah, some would argue it isn't suitable for first century.

Round shields, as pointed out, it doesn't really matter.
With assymetric shields (ovals, rectangles, hexagonal etc etc) then the grips are usually held horizontally. There are exceptions; I can think of the doncaster shield and one from Hjortspring, for example.
Thanks for boss advice everyone.
Just had a quote for 37 euro PLUS 25 euro postage for one (and a long wait) which is too much - especially as I have a jelling dragon carinated and a plain hemispherical one. Maybe I should just plump for the plain hemisphere ...... :?
