Clepsydra - Epictetus - 06-17-2009

I have been fascinated by the clepsydra, or water clock, for a long time. I even tried to make one back in school for a science fair. (Note I said “tried.”)

Anyway, I hope that I could get some help.

1) Has anyone ever seen a reconstruction of a Greek or Roman mechanical water clock? I have seen many diagrams, seemingly based on Vitruvius’ description, but never a working model. I would like to try to build one myself, but I would like to see other attempts.
2) Besides Vitruvius, does anyone know of any descriptions in ancient literature? Any paintings or mosaics, or even archaeological discoveries?

Thanks!
