Books on the barbarian invasion period - Justin of the New Yorkii - 07-02-2009 Greetings. I've been trying to fill out my bookshelf recently, because I have plenty of stuff on the Bronze Age right up through the Roman Republic until the time of Caesar, but then I have a big gap from that point up until the Dark Ages. I don't have much on the peak and the fall of Rome. But now I'm curious about the barbarian invasions. I would especially like to read about: - the Vandals - the Saxons and other western Germanic tribes - the Huns Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, I was going to order The Invasion of Europe by the Barbarians by J. B. Bury. But I see it's from 1928. Does anybody know if this is still worth reading, or if it's outdated at this point? Re: Books on the barbarian invasion period - Nicholas Gaukroger - 07-03-2009 I would heartily recommend the following books by Guy Halsall. "Warfare and Society in the Barbarian West, 450-900" "Barbarian Migrations and the Roman West, 376-568" IMO the latter is the best currently available assessment of the period - some excellent challenges of widely held "facts" on things like Gothic settlement (just what evidence there is, or more correctly there isn't for the usual view). |
