New Gladius Hispaniensis with scabbard - Opinions ? - Theodosius the Great - 07-19-2009 Avete, Age of Chivalry is coming out with a new gladius hispaniensis with a scabbard that seems to be based on an actual archaeological specimen. They call it the "Actium" : http://www.ageofchivalry.com/product.sc ... ductId=844 Based on the photo does anyone know if the scabbard is based on a real example ? The blade length seems correct for the period, BTW. ~Theo Re: New Gladius Hispaniensis with scabbard - Opinions ? - Gaius Julius Caesar - 07-19-2009 Can you pos a picture? Fun police have that site blocked..... Re: New Gladius Hispaniensis with scabbard - Opinions ? - Theodosius the Great - 07-19-2009 This work ? Seems the arbitrary nature of our restrictions blocks things for the strangest reasons.... Re: New Gladius Hispaniensis with scabbard - Opinions ? - Marcus Iulius Chattus - 07-19-2009 Maybe this so called "Fun-Police" is only restricted to Byron, because the site opens whitout problems on my PC.......... A really nice sword, but with a really nice price, too! 400 British Pounds or Dollar, or Bricks  Re: New Gladius Hispaniensis with scabbard - Opinions ? - Gaius Julius Caesar - 07-19-2009 Quote:Maybe this so called "Fun-Police" is only restricted to Byron, because the site opens whitout problems on my PC.......... Yes, Marcus, it is....do you work in the middle ofthe sea? Re: New Gladius Hispaniensis with scabbard - Opinions ? - john m roberts - 07-19-2009 I wish they'd show us the unsheathed blade. Are the edges parallel? wasp-waisted? Long point? I'm not investing any money without a better look. Re: New Gladius Hispaniensis with scabbard - Opinions ? - Theodosius the Great - 07-19-2009 Here's an attached photo : <!-- ia0 AOC Gladius.JPG<!-- ia0 [/attachment:oty9svms] Yes, I suppose they're still working on the blade since they don't show it. I hope it'll be a waisted blade with a long point. Quote:A really nice sword, but with a really nice price, too! 400 British Pounds or Dollar, or BricksI know :!: If the scabbard is more or less correct then it's a better deal than buying a regular Paul Chen hispaniensis, imo. ~Theo [Edited : meant to write "Paul Chen" instead of Christian Fletcher] Re: New Gladius Hispaniensis with scabbard - Opinions ? - Gaius Julius Caesar - 07-19-2009 Thanks Theo. Yeah, it looks nice, but Like John the blade shape would be the clincher.... Mind you I have 2 mark Morrows I need hilts and scabbards for, as I have lost my armourer. Too nice for me to mess up..... Re: New Gladius Hispaniensis with scabbard - Opinions ? - Marcus Iulius Chattus - 07-19-2009 @ Byron No, i resides on the swabian Jura, really far away from any kind of civilisation, surrounded by cows, sheeps and horses on a farm (or something that resembles on a farm.......), with a Internetconnection that only reached 256kbps and makes every work in the internet reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaly slooooooooooooooooow  I wish to see the blade, too! Maybe it is worth to give me a kick and let me begin with my long-planned early Imperial Impression, because my Flavian-Impression is nearly finished........ Re: New Gladius Hispaniensis with scabbard - Opinions ? - arklore70 - 07-19-2009 At first glance it looks pretty good. it looks to be a quality made sword. Now, for complete historic accuracy, I would like to see more pictures of it before commenting to include seeing what the shape of the blade is along with its dimensions and see what I can cross reference in Miks. It does look to hold some promise. Re: New Gladius Hispaniensis with scabbard - Opinions ? - LUCIUS ALFENUS AVITIANUS - 07-19-2009 Seems nice, but it's more a Mainz than a Hispaniensis... Will be easier to judge with more pictures. Re: New Gladius Hispaniensis with scabbard - Opinions ? - Theodosius the Great - 07-19-2009 So far no one has been able to comment on the scabbard. I'm wondering if it looks fantasy or historically-based. The scabbard is what gets messed up more often than the blade shape. For me it's half of the product. Quote:Seems nice, but it's more a Mainz than a Hispaniensis... Will be easier to judge with more pictures. The pommel would suggest that but the length of the blade suggests otherwise, if I'm not mistaken. Or is there a Mainz with a 65 cm long blade (without the tang) ? ~Theo Re: New Gladius Hispaniensis with scabbard - Opinions ? - LUCIUS ALFENUS AVITIANUS - 07-20-2009 Yes, the scabbard is very important. In fact, my comment about resembling a Mainz, is more related to the scabbard. The mouth piece is clearly inspired in some pieces of Mainz, Valkenburg, Porto Novo or the called "Long Windsor". I think Miks called it "Porto Novo type". I will see the book this night and be sure about that. 65 cm is very long... As the lenght is in inches, i have'nt saw that fact... Re: New Gladius Hispaniensis with scabbard - Opinions ? - Gaius Julius Caesar - 07-20-2009 Well, part of the scabbard is remenicent of hispaniensis scabbards available already, except the plate.... which, while it looks familiar, I am unable to confirm if I have seen an actual artifact, or a reconstrction drawing that has that design..... :? |
