Boy, those legionaries were tough! This guy looks to have done it properly.
Interesting that he's carrying his scutum on his back...not sure where the rest of his gear went, or how he'd carry his yoke.

He' does not appear to be wearing the Junkelmann harness (bottom of the page):

He indeed doesn't use the harness Junkelmann suggested for his march in the 80ties. I've tried both and I've to say I prefer this one, as you can better lent you pack onto it.
