Thraex shields - Dave G - 04-02-2010 Did Thraex gladiator shields have horizontal or vertical handgrips. I'd assumed it was horizontal similar to the larger scutum. Re: Thraex shields - jvrjenivs - 04-02-2010 I found that for the fighting style of a thraex gladiator (Junkelmann typology) a vertical handgrip is much more appropriate.
