Rhodes but.... no roses! - hoplite14gr - 06-11-2010 Quick history: http://www.faliraki-info.com/historirhodes.htm the coin. http://www.emery.gr/images/history_coins02.jpg Rhodes was known as "Ofiousa" (isle of the snakes) in the Ancient times. What are the facts supporting the idea that the: flower on seals and coinage is a Rose and not an Hybiskos? Red Hybiskos covered and still covers the island. http://www.valentine.gr/images/hibiscus-1.jpg When not fully opened is exactly as appears on the coin I believe its not the rose on the coins but Hybiskos. Note that mythical craftsmen TELCHINAE ruled the island -known also as Telchinia- and red hybiskos was the symbol of Hefestos the "Technical God". Please give me youthoughts Kind regards Re: Rhodes but.... no roses! - Astiryu1 - 06-12-2010 With the Evidence you have there a strong argument is made. Well Done! I tried to find something in my library to back it up or otherwise but couldn't find anything. We have Hibiscus here in Florida as well. They do resemble a rose when not fully bloomed though they are bigger. Re: Rhodes but.... no roses! - hoplite14gr - 06-12-2010 Hybiskos lives in warm climate. Another legend has ti that the sea -nymph Rode daughter of the god of the sea Poseidon Some folks think she was an older deity dughter of Ocean and Tythie She married the sun god and gave her name to the island. Rode is the name of the red hybiskos while the rose is called "rhodon" I believe there is no "Rhodian rose". Kind regards Re: Rhodes but.... no roses! - Astiryu1 - 06-12-2010 Even more info to back your claim! Do roses even grow on Rhodes? I hear they are a picky flower in terms of growing. |
