Source for Beech wood needed. - dengland - 08-25-2011
I'm starting a new Republican shield and understand Beech was the wood of choice. I'm not having much luck finding a dealer in Columbus, Ohio. Anyone out there have a good source? I am also looking for ideas for the boss and spine. Should it be a hard wood? Is it all one piece? How is it attached? Dimensions? Any help appreciated.

I don't know if Beech wood is like, the only correct wood to use, but a suggestion I know of for Roman shields in general is...Luan ply wood. I went to home depot and they have a 8-4 feet sheet for like, idk...um...$15? About that...and it's a good ply, 3 distinctive layers. anyway keep asking around. Legio XX's site suggests the Luan wood for it.

Around DC we have a specialty wood store, Colonial Hardwoods, that even deals in flexible luan, which is really easy to work with albeit more expensive.
Did you look for specialty lumber stores? You might also try a Woodcraft store like this one in Columbus

Google "beech thinwood usa". Pick a vendor (or e-bay)that suits your needs. Doesn't look to be cheap... Some of the vendors look to be helpful with lengths and other variables. Good luck.

Plywood is out. I plan on one vertical and two horizontal layers of thin strips of wood, glued together and covered with felt. I'll google the thin strips of beech and see what comes up. Thanks.

Easiest thing is to look for beech veneer. It comes in up to 3 mm thick plates.

I finally found some rough cut American beech lumber.(the suggested laminates just didn't seem authentic) I was going to drive about 180 miles round trip and then found the same seller on Ebay with reasonable shipping rates. The seller is Mr Lumber on Ebay or on Craigslist. They are located in Woodsfield,Ohio and stock a wide selection of hard woods. I'll run the boards thru a table saw to get the thin strips I need and then start gluing the shield together. Thanks for all the input.
