Plain wrong reenacting! - Titus Marius Secundus - 08-28-2011

Salvete! This is a topic on people trying to reenact and instead making it look to me, pathetic! I don't want to sound meaaaaan.. ..but there is a degree of such, and the following have passed it greatly!
I hope this is recognized by not only me but everyone who takes reenacting seriously, and agree that is must be stopped. :!: It insults the history of Rome itself. Here is a link to one of the worst...sorry no, THE WORST parade I have EVER seen!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiJua8Byal0&NR+1 I have no idea what country or groups, but they seriously need to change their appearance...only good thing, they involve the kids greatly... :-D in a bad way :o ..... ..... ..... Sad

Sam .....dude it's a parade. Other than the Macy's Day parade all parades participants look dorky. If it wasn't for the nudity Carnival in Brazil would look dorky.

The issue you raise has been debated to death on this forum. However, you must ask yourself the question "are these guys just marching in a parade or are they reenactors?"

I agree that equipment must be as accurate as possible but if they are marching not as reenactors but as a group of guys dressed in a costume then we cannot judge them.

The other problem is that many companies still sell garbage equipment and lie to the consumer as to the origins or accuracy in design. As a consequence, if a site says copy of centurion helmet found in Italy, it lends to the credibility that the item is a faithful copy.

On another note, much of the armor in the video is complete fantasy but some of those shield desgins appear to be copies from what we consider serious reenactment groups.

Mind you that I have seen photos of some supposed and prominent reenactment groups both in the US and Europe where some of the members have equipment that is not very good. This not so good equipment is not fantasy but the details of certain pieces lack any true study of the actual artifacts.

Be weay from where you buy your stuff as well. Some people on this forum use certain artisans and swear to the greatness of the reproductions. However, when I look at the same pieces, they lack many times. I am not an expert per se but before I buy ANY pieces, I thoroughly observe the photographs and read the data carefully to make sure that it is made properly. Also, it is a good idea to have constant contact with your armorer so that you can see how the work is progressing and also because it allows you to bounce ideas off one another to achieve the most accurate reconstruction possible.

Yeah, that's a parade in Santander. We have plenty of them here in Spain, just look at the video on the top for another one, in Lugo. They are just popular festivals, people eat and get drunk. The problem is when some of the associations involved in them are hired as history consultants. That's insulting.

Re: Plain wrong reenacting! - tiberius aemilius naso - 08-28-2011

What a shity ¿reenactment?. You were not supposed to watch it, it's unbearable. Is a festival in Galicia about the legend of the crossing of the river Lethes by the legions of Decimo Junio Bruto. It was believed to be the river of oblivion. Bruto had to convince the legionaries to cross it, so he did it first and called them by their name.

Re: Plain wrong reenacting! - Doc - 08-28-2011

I think the most important thing is are the people wearing this stuff reenactors at an event or is it a parade for fun or some theatrical performance.

Reenactors where these sorts of kits for a public reenactment display, should be judged and ridiculed. But if the purpose is for pure entertainment the let it be.

To be honest, it really does not matter how upset we get or that we can tell these sorts what we are thinking. You are not going to get everyone to comply nor can many people afford properly made custom equipment. Even off the shelf stuff is not that cheap either.

The issue is quite complex as to why who buys what.
