Reference Hippocrates - Cornelius A - 02-22-2012

In the computer game Rome Total War Hippocrates is quoted: "war is the only proper school of the surgeon".

Does anyone know the reference of this sentence? Is it even of the hand of Hippocrates?
Please give also the Latin/Greek translation of his work.

Thanks in advance

Re: Reference Hippocrates - Robert Vermaat - 02-22-2012

I think I traced it to:
Hippocrates, Volume III: On Injuries of the Head

But I did not find it in the translation:
http://classics.mit.edu/Hippocrates/headinjur.html

It seems as if this one may be unsourced..

I think the quote is a simplification of a longer sentence in "Physician (περί ἰητρόν), 14". This work has no online version, so I looked it up in the loeb classical librari 482, page 315. It says "Thus, the person intending to practice this kind of surgery must serve in the army, and accompany it on expeditions abroad; for in this way he would become experienced in this practice."

I think you must be right. Of the many, many instances where this line is "quoted" by (non-classicist) medics, I found one that credited it (wrongly) to "On wounds in the head" and one other that credited it to Loeb Vol. 482, p. 315!
