That's interesting!
Not sure why there's an assumption of a sacrifice unless there are finds and contexts we're not being told about. The bodies may just be what was collected up from the battle.
That makes less of a headline though! :wink:

If that's a shield board then it's VERY interesting. Oval, with several rows of nails across it....two layers of planks perhaps, or several reinforcing battens which might be an indication that it was originally curved?
Speculation...but I shall watch with interest.

A awesome find!
I was already informed by a Danish friend but I didn't knew about the shield.
The shield looks much like another wooden shield find dated from the late preroman iron age which was also found in Denmark.

This summary picture about Germanic shields that I made awhile contains a picture of the similar looking shield.

Thanks Jasper, where is that similar looking shield from? It does look to be the same shape and type of manufacture. Outside of my normal period of interest so I'd like to know more...where was it found, what species of wood was it? Thanks.

Great shield find. Now if someone just would have thrown an entire Roman soldier or two with scutum into a bog somewhere!

That is, in fact, the same shield, from this site, Vædebrovej. Look at the pattern of damage, holes, and remains of shield edging.

Well, they could just say bodies dropped into a bog...
