Iranian 3rd cent. daggers - Kai - 01-03-2013

Hello forum,

I am generally interested in late Parthian, early Sassanian-Persian daggers, but I have not found much. Does anyone have more infos? Pictures, dimensions, metallurgy etc.?
I only know one example, that from the Metropolian Museum of Art (see attachment), but neither do I know its dimensions, nor its dating...

regards,
Kai

That one is 7th Century.

There are some Arsacid and early Sasanian daggers in M. Khorasani's book "Arms and Armour from Iran," and they are depicted quite often on metalwork. They have broad quillions and have four suspension points in the manner of earlier Central Asian daggers.

Kai: this so called "P-suspension" will always be at least from the 4-5. centuries.

Thanks! The P-suspension seems indeed an indicator for a late dating...
I know Khorasani's book, but I had hoped for other, easier accessible sources. Anyway looks like I will have to go it - when I am back at office.
