I had always thought that that one was a third century sculpture.

Re: Show here your roman soldier impression - aitor iriarte - 07-14-2005

As I can see it, the soldier is holding a small circular/oval shield and a spear on his left hand and he is stabbing at the barbarian with the spear.
As to which concerns tha handgrip, I think that it is rather difficult to see if it is vertical or horizontal (senseless if the shield would be a round one).

Quote:Avete.... just editing the post I'd previously worded beginning with 'cor, boys....' followed by a double entendre about equipment. Decided this isn't the appropriate place to be drooling over hunky sword-wielding blokes....

Pictoria

Where else can you do it?......lol
I find the Gallery is also a very appropriate place to drool....and at shows...especially when early Roman legs and short tunics are on show...
You try telling an 'ordinary' guy that you would like to see him in a squamata...!
Having said that....I hope females do not drool over me while in male kit.... Confusedhock:

I just don't seem to be able to get these images small enough to load up onto Romanarmy.com, so I am putting them here.

Andrew,
Who of the pair are you?
I'd love to see more detailed pics of the parma wearer's cuirass... 8)

Hi Aitor

Quinta put on a small event yesterday for the kids. It is the school summer holidays in the UK right now. But because it was during the week, there were only 7 of us, 4 soldiers, 2 children and civilian female.

Here a couple more photographs. If I get any more I will let you know.

Comerus,

The helmet was custom made by Dr Antoni Feldon. The proportions, in my opinion don't quite look right on the Nix Imperial one.

Oh, and I apologize to Robert for the 4th picture. I shamelessly copied his picture. Serves me right though, it did not quite come out as well. My baldric is all twisted and snagged on the cuirass

Many thanks, Andrew! Big Grin
If you can get some close-ups in a near future, they will be warmly welcomed.

Hi Comerus,
I'm well 8) , when will be born your son?

Aitor,

I have sent some very large pictures to your new email address. Hope these will be of help? There are three different locked scale cuirass' in the six pictures. The one I am wearing requires some minor repairs. This year's winter project.

Re: Show here your roman soldier impression - aitor iriarte - 08-18-2005

I've received them, many thanks again, Andrew! Big Grin
I forgot to tell you that Paul will supply the scales for my fujture new cuirass.
Is that beautiful shiny helmet the one Steve made for you?

No that one was made by Toni Feldon. Steve made my perfectly fitting Aux Cav E. One of the beauties of Steve's work is all the work he puts in first, making a model of your head.

They are both beautiful helmets.

Re: Show here your roman soldier impression - Sassanid - 08-19-2005

Hi Aitor,

My mails to you are being sent back again undelivered again, so I will post it here for you.

I will send you a close up after my next visit then.

On the one opening on the LH side - Paul has experimented with different
ideas, but I think in this case his idea was to minimise the number of weak
points in the protection. The join is obviously protected in battle behind
the shield. It is very easy to put on, and is comfortable to wear. I never
noticed a problem with flexability, although it is not as good as mail, as
you would expect with locked scale. And the reason why they are so short.

While I disagree with many things in Ian's book, especially the bit about
wearing locked scale over mail (I tried it, and could hardly move), I am
pretty sure the cuirass in plate 9 and 11 is a copy of one of Paul's.

Hi Andrew,
Bounced again? I cannot understand why some e-amails from you arrive perfectly and others are bounced, totally puzzling! :?
I am for leaving as few weak points on armour as possible too! therefore, if only one side opening works, then I'll try it!
Many thanks!

Re: Show here your roman soldier impression - John M McDermott - 09-26-2005

Here is more of my early 1st c. impression. I have depicted the wearing of the sagum as seen in many grave steles. Also, I have attempted to achieve the tunic pleat with mixed results.
