Purification ritual - richsc - 06-18-2003

A member of the Legio XX who plays a slave, was in mourning dress at Roman Days. She mentioned that to visit a caupona in mourning would necessarily invoke a purification ritual to the site, but she didn't have a reference for the ritual such that we might be able to recreate it. Any help ?

There is a (new ) book on Roman funerals by R. P. Schoen , 2000,Zutphen, the Netherlands. It is in Dutch.
He states that after the funeral/cremation, those who took part in the ceremonies were circled 3 times. And sprinkled with water by using a branche of laurel. Then the people had to step over a fire. When this ritual was completed, the one performing it would tell the funeralgoers ILICET "You may go".
I do not know if there was a different ritus for slaves of the household.
Salve Gaius! Thanks for the answer. I don't know if we can get folks to step over a fire, but maybe a 'representation' of a fire.
