Mystery of the missing Ninth Legion Solved? - Graham Sumner - 05-19-2017

I thought the thread title might attract attention!

The forthcoming Dr Who episode 'The Eaters of Light' on 17th June is set in Roman Britain and involves the fate of the missing Ninth Legion.

Aliens I suspect!

Graham.

OMG... Wink

This should be interesting. I always thought the 9th was massacred by the Seal People. Angel

Not just aliens: a pan-dimensional alien released by a Pict!

For those who didn't see it, or are still not sufficiently horrified, here are a couple of pics of their latest legionaries (or centurions, as the entire squad were referred to as!!):

It's interesting to compare with their effort from back in 2010:

In the earlier episode you refer too 'The Ermine Street Guard' were also involved, mainly as background figures but also some of their kit was used. It all seemed totally different this time around.

I think the 'centurion's' reference was supposed to be a bit of an in joke among the soldiers.

However Doctor Who's father in law was a Roman centurion!

Interesting, I look forward to it.

I have always believed the legion was lost somewhere in North Britain, during a period of widespread violence and disturbance.

I think archaeologists should look for Seal People burials, excavate them, and examine their stomach contents. Most likely, they'll find remains of the 9th. Big Grin

Well, that's a worthless bit of teaser then! Big Grin At least I hope you're teasing about Scotland?
I do hope however that you consider explaining a) why any of them was buried in the first place and b) why we can find plenty of signs that VIIII Hispana was moved to the continent.

Actually nobody asked that. Someone (not me) asked where.

On reflection, as I couldn't discuss my comments it would have been more sensible to have not said anything. I've deleted all my comments and apologies for wasting everyone's time - clearly I should have thought it through.
