Hastati belt - Seth Rainey - 08-21-2017
Hello! I'm looking for information on what type of belt an early hastati might have worn for my son. He's been doing lots of research but just can't seem to find anything. A simple leather belt with a bronze buckle? A linen or cloth belt? We just need a little help. He has a scutum, sword, helmet, tunic, shoes and an early plum. Just need a belt to finish him off.

The earliest visual depictions of Roman belts on the Pydna monument look like just a basic belt, probably leather, nothing fancy; no hint of an elaborate buckle. Make sure the sword is worn on the right---thats the one detail that makes it Roman!

Like Michael J. Taylor said, it should be plain. The reasoning is as follows:
1. Even though Samnites used metal belts, no depictions of Romans having them have been found, IIRC.
2. Hastati were supposed to be young men up to 26 years of age. They´d have mostly limited resources and as such most of these would be put towards procuring the best armour and arms they could procure.
What property would your young hastatus be entitled to? Is he of the first property class or one of the poorer ones?
