Roman Crest Holders - Artur - 09-04-2018

Hi everyone,

I'm currently working on a crest for my helmet (Imperial Gallic G) and was wondering if anyone has historical examples of 'T' shaped crest holders? Were they decorated at all or just plain, square cross section iron? I only managed to find 2 examples online and only 1 in books so I'm hoping to have more luck here.

Cheers!

Unfortunately it is one piece of equipment that has a lot of finds but contexted as a individual item so spread over many books, I have not seen a comprehensive book on them, however They are some in Russell Robinson's book see photo and two I have found

They may be someone out there that has a nice database on them. As you can see not very decorated mostly plain a functional piece of kit.

Hi Brennivs,

Thank you for the images, those are really helpful! I noticed you don't see many traverse crest holders. Do you think they would be the same shape apart from the attachment point?

Cheers!

Yes, just the foot will be turned 90 degrees.
