Cavalry and Scythian Impressions - Sagittarii - 02-19-2019

I retired from jousting last May and took some time off to go race bikes again.

Late last year I got back on the horses and started work on a new period for me, Ancients.

In particular Ancient Greek and Scythians.

I've been merrily buying and making equipment. I purchased the bronze Thracian helm and made the spolas. I still have scales to add to the front upper chest and the rear of the yoke.
I'm used to wearing 14th and 15th C harnesses, so I feel under armoured in this kit.
The spolas weighs just under 6kg,,,,, my 15thC frogmouth joust helm weighed 8kg by itself!
This gear is wonderful to ride in Big Grin

I had a go at making a Scythian sword and a war hammer.

Still making clothing for both impressions. I have spent the last few months training my stallion Athos and working on my bareback riding.

And a ride in some of the kit. Thanks to John Conyard for his help and advice.

Yes!  Very nice!  Smile

So what type of leather/rawhide did you use to make the Spolas?

Nice horse-archery, by the way. Smile

RE: Cavalry and Scythian Impressions - Sagittarii - 02-24-2019

I used 4-5mm Veg Tanned.

The yoke is two layers glued flesh side to flesh side. It is up to 10mm thick in places.

I can personally attest to its protective capabilities after being driven into the ground on my left shoulder when I had a horse trip and lawn dart me over the front! Tongue

The front and back are one layer with the scales sewn to them, but there is another inner front section that is 4mm thick as well.

Well, I know what's on the agenda once I can find a job.

Thanks Tony, first proper usable sword I have made.

More practice today.

Bit of jumping.

Cutting with the reground Deepeka Kopis. I'll grind some more out of the blade next weekend.

Picking up an Aspis at the end of the month and having some bronze greaves made so I can do Hoplite as well.

I stripped the kopis/falcata scabbard and hey! Turns out it is made from some sort of wood cardboard hybrid!

Anyway, recovered it in layers of glue and calico and sealed it with a lacquer to give it some sort of waterproofing.

Made the baldric from cotton, (lets pretend it is goat hair), and attached to new leather hangers. Reused the brass chape and mouth.

I was going to remake the opening so it had the mouth that encased the first part of the hilt. But there was no point. I'll make a proper scabbard when I make a better kopis.

I love this one.

Lost all the original photos in this post. Doesn't matter, done a bit of an update to my kit since then.

Made some new Scythian clothing. Based the pants on these 3000 year old pants.

And made a coat as well. Very bloody comfortable!

I lashed out and had a pair of bronze greaves custom made for me. And well sexy they are!

Hi Rod Great stuff indeed, I dont know if you know you can upload your images direct to the forum and have complete control over them as long as the site exists, you can also edit old posts to update pics and dead links...

Hope this helps Smile
