Do Roman fortress gates open in or out?

I'm not 100% sure about Roman ones in particular - but nearly all fortifications throughout history have inwardly opening gates.
Done for mechanical and defensive reasons.

If you go to this site and scroll down, you can see an image one side of the north gate of Milecastle 42 on Hadrian's Wall showing the pivot hole for one leaf of the double gate. This clearly swings inwards into the recess. It is true that milecastles were fortlets, rather than fortresses, but I think that this establishes the principle.
