It takes awhile to get going and when it finally dose I end up burning myself, however the men in our group have no problems. do you line the inside with anything (sand/soil)or do you just put the charcoal straight into it and do you use much charcoal.

yours Bricca

Re: Legio IX\'s new brazier - venicone - 07-18-2003 hiya

thats almost the same as our version of the pompeii cooker- apart from the length of the legs - and our version has been made approx 1/3 smaller than the original dimensions.

Its used at virtually every event we do and all our roman food is cooked on it.
We have a folding 'frying pan' as seen here - there are two saucepans which fit in the 'holder's on the cooker .

As you can see here it can be used to barbeque food too by adjusting the metal sliding rods

We dont use sand etc Bricca - and we use lumpwood charcoal or wood as fuel

Talking History Forum
Re: Legio IX\'s new brazier - scythius - 07-20-2003 Avete, omnes!

Venicone - I really like the small brazier...

Since we've got a large brazier, and you folks have a smaller one - we could call yours 'Brazier Minor' - oh, wait...I think that's where Cappodocia is...

Sorry.

Scythius
LEG IX HSPA - COH III EXPG - CEN I HIB

Hipsters, Flipsters, and Finger-Poppin' Daddies, Knock me your lobes!
I came here to lay Caesar out, Not to hip you to him.
The bad jazz that a cat blows, Wails long after he's cut out.
The groovy, is often stashed with their frames, So don't put Caesar down........'

Re: Legio IX\'s new brazier - venicone - 07-21-2003 what have you cooked on it?

Talking History Forum
Re: Legio IX\'s new brazier - scythius - 07-21-2003 Avete, omnes!

So far, we've cooked a variety of things - the crowd favorites have been the pork and apple stew and the half chickens...

The brazier was so popular that it was used nearly 24 hours a day during our last event - either by the folks cooking or late into the night for comfort whilst talking into the wee hours.

Brazier - Anonymous - 09-16-2003 Very nice!

We were recently at Birdoswald with the VIII, when Fronto of the XIIII gave a similar brazier to the Chester boys and we christened it together. It was very useful - we used it for 2 days but weren't very adventurous I'm afraid. We had not really come prepared for great Apicius culinary extravaganzas - made some basic casseroles though to keep body & soul together till evening.

I would like to ask you though what is the reference for the archaeological find itself from Pompeii, as I have seen line drawings in a few books but not been able to find the actual reports. We would like to make one as a winter project, but would rather have the original report for providence before we do.

Thanks

Claudia (yet another) Crisis

brazier - Anonymous - 09-16-2003 Avete

can I also ask what fuel you used on your brazier. On the photos the pieces looked rather large - more like coal than charcoal.
We used charcoal at Birdoswald, but found that it burned out very quickly, so coal would give a more prolonged heat, although taking longer to get up to temperature.

Claudia

|
