...... and a new one at Haltern ! - Simplex - 10-07-2021 .....following aerial reconnaisance from 2011, the local archeologists went on to pursue the traces of trenches , -- obviously roman ones. It took so long because research at Olfen and Bielefeld-Sennestadt had priority. https://www.wn.de/muensterland/kultur-regional/spitzgraben-im-nieselregen-2443450 https://www1.wdr.de/nachrichten/westfalen-lippe/roemer-ausgrabung-haltern-104.html In short: it is a marching camp dating before the regular to about 12/11 BC through which the trenches of the later regular camp are cutting. Size about 24 ha. It matches well into the line of other "drusian" camps at Dorsten-Holsterhausen and Oberaden. Hi Robert, ....chances are that at least the XIX may still have been garrisoned at Dangstetten (Küssaburg,D) those days. (As a lead medaillon found there suggests) The notes over at livius.og suggest that LLEG XVII and XVIII were assigned to the camps on the Lower Rhine and/or the Lippe. So there is a certain likelyhood that both legions may have been temporarily stationed at Haltern that early. Greez Siggi |
