question - Anonymous - 05-20-2004

Upon reading some of the posts here i had a gerneral question about a statisitc about the makeup of the site. Are most of the people on this site Italian, or do they have strong italian roots. Not that i have anything against Italians, i was just in rome during spring break and the italians seemed nice enough, except for the discrimination but thats to be excpected. For one I do not have a hint of italian blood whats so ever, but coincidentally my blood is comprised of gaulic blood, the very people who led to the fall of rome as I am heavily germanic, scottish, irish and sweedish.

Italian or Italian roots? Of course there are some Italians on RAT but most of us (the rest) have little to do with them, except perhaps for some far Italian ancestor, during the Roman Empire!
Re: question - JRSCline - 05-21-2004

We have quite a few bona-fide Italians, who are sure to show up any minute now. (Titus, where are you? Goffredo? Luca?)

But no, most of us cannot claim to be of Italian origin or citizenship. We once had a poll on this sort of thing; perhaps it's time for another... I'll whip one up.
Hi Pomeius,
Strange, I thought that most people on this list were Dutch like me! (Jeroen already beat me to it)

Enlighten me, please; you claim to have "germanic, scottish, irish and swedish" blood. I presume by that you are saying your ancestors came from those countries, for 'blood' knows no boundaries of course. But how come that mix would make you 'gaulic' (I presume you mean Gallic)? That would be either 'french' or maybe 'celtic', neither of whom can be said to have been the "very people who led to the fall of rome". Nor, for that matter, were the Swedes, the Irish or the Scots.

Also, if you associate Italians with discrimination, why would you assume that most of the members would be Italian?
If you'd discover that here we are for the most Italians, should you leave this forum?

Don't worry, the Italians (I prefer Italic) here are very few and this tells us how much the Romanity is, above all, an Idea felt in all the World.
If the Italians are so few here is because the Romanity concept in Italy was destroyed after the WWII systematically, especially in the schools. And now we can see the results.

I'd like you enlight me on that too: what discrimination and why it's expected?

Before you explain better, I can tell you that nowhere but in the present Italy appearances are deceitful. My Country is really particular about it and the not Italians cannot know it.
Moreover, I can say, that the Italians that living in other countries since a lot are very different from the "modern" Italians living in Italy. This phenomenon amazes me any day yet...

I hope that old cliches of the black curled haired Italians, with moustaches, pizza, songs, spaghetti, movies and mafia be finally out, because things are now so different, even in the "old" south of Italy. We surely lack of good propaganda, while we suffer of loads of common places, this is the point, I think that the Italians are now so tolerant and not discriminating that it's becoming a problem.

BTW, a girl, friend of mine (a german airline hostess), once told me that since she knows so many countries of the world, she'd like to live in Italy only... Surely because of the wonderful beauty of the country, but for the Italians' qualities too...

Just to say: Roma this morning is simply magnificent, a great sun shines in a deep blue sky, and nor the pollution or traffic of certain zones, can delete the sweet west wind and the spring flowers fragrance. Ok, ok, too much romantic I know, but I LOVE this City
time to enlighten you - Anonymous - 05-21-2004

Sorry for the delayed response i'm only online in the morning. First a little to clear up about my ancestry. I may have used the wrong term. I meant to say i am part gallic, and didn't mean to signify that they led to the fall of the roman empire, but simply that they gave a lot of problems to them in the earlier years. I am for the most part germanic, and a quarter dutch as well. As far as the quote on the expected discrimination. I am an American citizen, but identify myself more by my european ancestery instead of being american sometimes. The discrimination i expected was not for just Italy but for all of europe. Europeans tend to not like Americans right now because of their leader, so I expected to be discrimated against in Europe. I am not trying to make myself look like someone who hates everyone who is not american. If I could choose a place to live outside of America it would be Rome by far. If I was a little unclear about my question or if my response was a little confusing please feel free to either email me at [email protected] or even im me at kslice2k2. It is good to know that there are a good mixture of people on this site, and no if it was just Italians I would have stayed because i feel it is valuable to be able to communicate and talk to people of every ethnic and cultural background.

I thank you, out of all the countries i've visited in europe, the netherlands would be the one I would like to live in the most, and I have been all over europe. I think amsterdam is one of the best cities in the world.

Just tell them you love their pretty tulips and windmills. They NEVER get tired of hearing that!
OK, seriously now, I only like windmills when I can take my kids there to eat pancakes (the modern ones are an eye-sore!), I've never visited the tulip-fields and I hate wooden shoes!
