Hello - Gladius - 01-12-2006

Hello everyone. I've been posting in the Roman Army forums for nearly five years and I have to say it's still the best venue for people interested in the subject to share and relate information. I used the nic "A Barca" in the past and with such a name you could imagine the interesting and quite heated discussions I was able to generate.

I'd like to ask about a few individuals who used to post frequently in the forums and who were very much a fixture of the site. One was a very knowledgeable guy who left the impression that he knew everything about Roman history, knew Latin, and gave book suggestions the size of bibliographies that would make an established author blush. Another was a woman who served in the U.S. Armed Forces and who the last time I saw was posted in Germany. It's unfortunate I can't recall their names at the moment (it's been a while since I've posted).

It's good to see the site is still going strong after all these years and I look forward to having good and informative discussions with everyone on board.

J. R. S. Cline, you mean.

And the other. I don't know. Matt Amt or Dan Peterson?

I remember you, Barca. The other's name you're looking for is Sander Van Dorst. I think his web site is still active.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, those are the people I was referring to. Where are they and do they still post?

Re: Hello - jvrjenivs - 01-12-2006

Jenny isn't posting since a while. Very busy with work.

Sanders is still posting, if I'm right.

Re: Hello - Praefectusclassis - 01-12-2006

Jenny might actually turn up again sometime. Sander hasn't been active on RAT v1 or v2 for around 2 years now... :?

Re: Hello - Crispvs - 01-14-2006

I never understood why Sander withdrew from RAT. Was it something someone said?

Crispvs :?: :?:

Welcome back, Barca... yes, I remember you too!

Welcome back Jenny! (assuming, that is, that you haven't just been lurking here this past year keeping an eye on us all).

Homecoming - JRSCline - 03-28-2006

Oh, thanks, Crispus. I've looked in whenever time presented itself. Things have always seemed to be well in hand under Jasper's stewardship, and in my remote location (Egypt) my access was rather limited. Since coming to Florida, I've been further overwhelmed with my command duties -- but am resolving to carve out more time for res romanae.

When we discussed the movement of RAT from its original home at Ezboard -- which was really becoming too expensive of a host (and worse, the wonderful reference utility of RAT was threatened with extinction as Ezboard began killing the oldest threads off) -- the idea of using YaBB or a similar solution came up.

(Thread extinction, by the way, was a contributing factor to Sander's departure. I can't begin to express how disheartening it was to the original RAT veterans to have spent such great effort to research detailed posts -- even with notes and references -- and then to watch them start disappearing. Something desperately had to be done.

Migration was something that I knew I didn't have the technical know-how for, so I gave Jasper the green-light to webmaster the new RAT, as well as a much-needed upgrade of the original RomanArmy.com site. He and Christy have done a marvelous job -- and although the migration of old board threads is imperfect, it has been much more efficient than what I could have achieved with my own web skills. I firmly believe in the power of the team over the individual.

Jasper has always known his charter in creating RAT v.2, and I always knew that eventually I would be available to spend more time on our cooperative projects. We are also co-editors of a new academic journal, and since my time is still limited, I'll have to focus my energies mostly on that start-up. RAT is full-grown, but JAMS is still a baby in the womb -- Jasper's just dubbed me a "divine mom", lol, so I suppose the analogy is apropos.

This is a great tragedy. Especially when the preservation of digital information is such a simple thing... and hard drive memory has dropped so dramatically in price. I am sorry to hear about Sander's leaving, though I knew him not. Perhaps if one (or more) of his former friends here invited him back, he might return?

Re: Hello - JRSCline - 04-05-2006

From what we've been able to gather, Sander's consumed with other projects. Several of us have invited him back, and I still hope we'll see him again one day, in his old form.

Not that I don't enjoy reading the reenactor stuff, but I miss his posts that I can really use -- the ones with extensive Latin quotes, epigraphy, and footnotes! Big Grin
