Best UK I know of - richsc - 02-18-2006

Two suppliers that are excellent in quality in the UK that I know of:
for samian ware, Gilbert Burroughes--"Ambleside", Chediston, Halesworth, Suffolk IP19 0AQ , UK (no email or website). He does have a phone number somewhere.

and for glass, Taylor and Hill at
Roman Glass Makers
and from the US, Iulia Passamonti Venetian Cat Pottery

It's worthwhile updating this too: how about it everyone? Other sources?

Re: Roman Pots and General Kitchenware - Viventius - 02-19-2006

I've had some excellent Roman pottery from these sources:

John Hudson
http://www.hudsonclaypotter.com/

Andrew MacDonald
The Pot Shop
Harding House
Christ's Hospital Terrace
Off Steep Hill
Lincoln
(no web presence; pm me if you want his phone number)

Trinity Court Potteries aka Jim the Pot
http://www.trinitycourtpotteries.co.uk/
(often at the various re-enactment fares)

Pot Shop\'s wares? - richsc - 03-08-2006

What sort of pottery does MacDonald do? How do his prices compare to the other two?

Re: Roman Pots and General Kitchenware - Viventius - 03-08-2006

He'll have a go at anything you ask and his prices are pretty good. You'll need to be specific and supply good archaeological standard drawings. He did a complicated flagon (the original is the 3rd pot down on the page here: http://www.whitehallvilla.co.uk/materia ... _pots.html ) for the Whitehall Roman Villa Excavations, and sold me one of the copies for £15.

Re: Roman Pots and General Kitchenware - Viventius - 03-09-2006

Trinity does some nice stuff, but most of it is too early for Late Roman, which is why I''ve used MacDonald, asking him to do specifically late pots. MacDonald often has some good early stuff in stock, including mortaria seconds for about £5.00, and a nice cheese press. He's worth a look the next time you're in Lincoln, particularly as his workshop is close to the centre. Both Trinity Court Potteries and John Hudson are very good on getting the fabrics right, as well as the forms. I've had pots from all three and they're excellent.

Pompeii Kitchen - Iulia Cassia Vegetia - 03-17-2006

I thought that you'd all get a kick out of this:

A customer from Illinois ordered a half-scale reproduction of a Pompeii VI amphora from me to put in her kitchen. It was a Christmas gift for her husband. The way that she displayed it is absolutely beautiful, and I posted it on my website.

Go to: http://venetiancat.com/Price-List.html
Scroll down a bit to the Pompeii VI 1/2 scale reproduction, and, and you will see photos of these beautifully decorated walls. The whole concept is very Roman.
