Re: Military History - Paullus - 06-12-2007

Roman - all periods

Ancient Warfare - non Roman, particularly Sarmatians and Macedonian

Napoleonic - Aside from witnessing a legion in formation, the only thing that would match that thrill would be seeing a division of King George IIIs redcoats and Highlanders in the field.

WWI & II - Very personal wars for me, due to my family's involvement.

Re: Military History - DARTHICUS - 06-14-2007

I am interested in all warfare, from when the first man to pick up a rock in anger or fear, to what it is going on right now in the World and what I fear it is leading to.

From huge Armies clashing in places like Zama, to what happens in a dark parking lot, when someone is forced to defend their lives.

I am a martial arts instructor as well as a History buff, anytime someone is tryinf to kill or control another, it is war.IMO

Re: Military History - Gladius Hispaniensis - 06-17-2007

World War II
Ancient Rome
Ancient Greece
Crusades
Middle Eastern (incl. Caliphate, Ottoman, Seljuk, Mamluk, Mongolian)
Indian Mutiny 1857
Post WWII Indo-China
World War I
Arab-Israeli Wars
In that order.

Re: Military History - sonic - 06-17-2007

I have to admit that I voted for 'eight or more' of the above, since the only ones I am not interested in are the '19th century US warfare, incl. Civil War' - although the Civil War does have a limited appeal when I am in a weird mood - and 19th century European and Colonial warfare, as I am just not interested.

However, I am most interested in:

Early Italy i.e. when Rome was just a small town that everybody could ignore! and when the Samnites and Etruscans were at their height;

Sumerian warfare, the earliest known;

The Fall of the West and the Rise of Byzantium, ie c. AD 400-600;

The Rise of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms, AD 400-600

and The End of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom, c. AD 1000-1100.

I hope that gives you enough information!!

Strangely enough, neither Alexander the Great nor Julius Caesar interest me - possibly because of overfamiliarisation: let's admit it, they are over-covered in the history books!!

Re: Military History - marsvigilia - 07-30-2007

It's important to know something about non-Roman ancient military history in order to better understand the obligation of Rome to civilize these barbarous rabble. Beyond that, there really is no point.

Long live the Empire.

Soldier on. Tongue

Re: Military History - Gaius Julius Caesar - 07-30-2007

Exactly! And to the lions with those who dissagree!

Re: Military History - stevesarak - 09-20-2008

My passion is ancient warfare, but the details of any battle through the ages interest me.

Re: Military History - Polynikes - 10-15-2008

Assyrian warfare in particular interests me
Greek
Roman
9th - 17th Century
Napoleonic
Boer and Zulu wars
And "non-western" areas (Japan, India, China)

Re: Military History - Fennia - 11-26-2008

Every option between Ancient and WWI&WWII.

Re: Military History - Iosephus Augustus - 01-11-2009

The US Civil War in general and the Battle of Gettysburg in particular have always fascinated me. In my 30's and 40's I spent alot of time reading about the US Army in WWII and the Korean War because of my father's participation in both. I am now refocusing on the Roman Army.

Re: Military History - Wes - 01-12-2009

Ancient Rome, all of it
Vikings
Medieval
Dark Ages
French and Indian War
American Revolution
Age of Sail and piracy
WWI
WWII

I have been doing black powder shoots and American Colonial re-enacting for at least 20 years. Used to drive my Mother crazy making chain maille in my room as a kid. She would vacuum up dropped links. I really enjoy making things in a "period correct" way....
