Civilian pictures - Woadwarrior - 05-24-2006 are these civilian pics accurate, i mean did ancient romans look EXACTLY like those renactors exactly exactly and can some one post a few links with good civilian pics? oh and off topic but how do u gain immunes? http://www.esg.ndirect.co.uk/cov/index.htm Re: Civilian pictures - Robert Vermaat - 05-24-2006 Quote:are these civilian pics accurate, i mean did ancient romans look EXACTLY like those renactors exactly exactly How would we know what ancient Romans looked like EXACTLY? None of us were there, so this will remain an unanswerable question. We can get a pretty good idea, but that will always be based on artistic representations (statues, frescoes, mosaics) or descriptions from authors. Immunes can't be gained, it's not a points thing. If you mean laudes, these are gained by good and interesting posts. Re: Civilian pictures - Viventius - 05-24-2006 In answer to Woadwarrior: There are some pix of Comitatus' civilians here: http://www.comitatus.net/event_bolsover05.htm We're Late Roman, so look a little different from the 1st-2nd century Ermine Street Guard civvies. There's a useful book: Roman Clothing and Fashion by Alex Croom, which has plenty of pictures of Roman civilian clothing, including those from different provinces. If you literally want to see what a Roman looked like, here's a reconstuction of the face of a Roman Woman from London, using her skull, found in a 4th century burial: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/597762.stm And Vortigern said: Quote:How would we know what ancient Romans looked like EXACTLY? And archaeology can help with that too - re: the other link in my previous post to the reconstruction of the woman's face, and there are finds of hair in burials, eg. at York: http://www.york24.org/yorkshire-museum/ ... 2/hair.jpg Re: Civilian pictures - FAVENTIANVS - 05-24-2006 From Al-Fayum Egypt, http://www.portret.com.ua/history_of_portrait1_eng.html http://www.artfilm.org/Art/pic-fayu.htm http://www.answers.com/main/ntquery?dsi ... ey=Gallery of Fayum mummy portraits&linktext=Gallery of Fayum mummy portraits Re: Civilian pictures - Quintus Julius Furius - 05-26-2006 Some picture of civilian gallo-romans..... http://www.traditionet.fr/auxilia.nsf/P ... 790056F26E Re: Civilian pictures - Quintus Julius Furius - 05-26-2006 http://www.traditionet.fr/auxilia.nsf/P ... 4000717CF9 Re: Civilian pictures - Robert Vermaat - 05-26-2006 Sébastien, thanks for the images! |
