Re: Rome vs Japan - Praefectusclassis - 08-28-2006

The last weeks, the server RAT shares with a few hundred other sites has been marked as spammer a few times. Sites such as yahoo immediately stop accepting email from such sites until the alert is 'off' again. That may be the reason. System works, email just doesn't arrive.

and now for something completely different - MARCvSVIBIvSMAvRINvS - 09-21-2006

We all know well that the Romans copied other armour styles and helmets, and in a way made them their own.....

Well........ The Japanese did also...........

here are some pics!

Quote:Also keep in mind that most Samurai didnt wear metal armor. Only the richest of the Samurai could afford it. Another thing the Kitana (longest of the 3 swords they carried) is in truth not the best weapon to use against an armored unit. They were made out of Iron (what little the country had), but was made with the idea that it was going to go up against either cloth wearing infantry or leather wearing Samurai. I blame movies and some Anime for distorting the truth about the Samurai. Narukami I am impressed with your knowledge of Japans history. I my self have been drawn towards it, but with all of my other college classes I have little time for personal reaserch. I had to also remind my friend that the Legion fell about 1000 years before the time of the Samurai. So one on one favors the Samurai, but group on group strongly favors the Romans.

EEEH???????????????

I am very sorry but what you are saying is TOTALLY wrong!!! I have bee studying samurai history for more than 10 years now ans what you write is total nonsense!

Read some books by dr Stephen Turnbull for instance.....

Samurai in Leather armor.......... is as bad as Romans in Leather armor...

i am sorry but i really think you should STFW in this matter....

Hahahahaha Vortigern...... Indeed it is a bit strong worded......

my humble apologies....... and i dont even know wether I replied to this same quoted post earlier........

I will tone it down slightly......

FYI....... to keep in the abbreviation culture so thoroughly started by our Roman ancestors...

There is no evidence whatsoever for Japanese leather armor. The only leather fragments of what could be described as an armor like thingie...
are fragments dating back to the Jomon period 10.000 to 250 BC, and the Yajoi culture 300 BC. and 250 AD.

Iron armor 500 AD Yamato period

Leather appliques like cuire bouille were used to enhance armor and mainly kabuto, and after The Warring States period 戦国時代, sengoku jidai which lasted roughly from the middle 15th to the early 17th century, came to full bloom in the Edo period. 1630-1868.
Also the level of craftsmanship in applying Urushi lacqueredPaper mache (also to enhance kabuto) is still unsurpassed!

continued:

The japanese printed leather sheets which often decorate Japanese armour are always backed by metal.

Also the Japanese used chain mail.

though it is considerably different from European mail., it has been in existence even before the Europeans reached Japan.
