Re: Show here your Greek warrior impression - Lýsandros - 05-19-2009 Thank you very much for your warm welcome guys. I will post more pics as soon as the equipment will be ready for use Oh, and I made a mistake there, the ship will weight 5-7 tons with full equipment. Re: Show here your Greek warrior impression - Peter Raftos - 05-19-2009 A hearty greeting to you and your crew. Where are you based? Good to see another real man wearing a himation instead of those girly chitons Re: Show here your Greek warrior impression - Lýsandros - 05-19-2009 We are based in Slovakia, Central Europe. Our newly established Ancient Greece division is currently heavily understaffed, with just 4 people. We are planning two heavy hoplites (including me as a captain of the ship) and two peltastoi. (Plus our dear female counterparts, who should not remain onboard during long sea travels.. you know what they say about women on the high seas ). There will be 20 oars that will be manned by our friends from the local yacht club, so luckily there will be no problem even if the wind is not favorable. And concerning himation, yes i love it! But to be perfectly honest about my skills, took me almost 2 hours to learn how to put it on correcly  I guess someone will delete some of these posts sooner or later, as they exceed the topic a bit for which I apologise. Re: Show here your Greek warrior impression - Peter Raftos - 05-19-2009 OK Counting you and our friends in France who play with Athena Promachos, that makes almost 30 groups (not counting performance groups and individuals) dedicated to this period: 300 Spartan Warriors / Warriors of Thermopylai Ares Anax Athena Promachos Enomotoi Figli del Sole - Eliades Kouron Hetairoi Hoplites of Athena Koryvantes Spartans and Amazons Spartan Society Spartan Warband Spartan Warband: Northshield Spartan World Spartiatikes Mores Taxeis Plataiai Teuta Spineta The Ancient Hoplitikon of Melbourne The Greek Warriors The Hoplite The Hoplite Association The Sydney Ancients Triballi Thrakoi Warriors of Greece Western Spartans Cenma Pagana MARS Melbourne Ancient Re-enactment Society Correct me if I am wrong. I am looking forward seeing more pictures of your group. Building a fully functional Direme? What a great project! Re: Show here your Greek warrior impression - Peter Raftos - 06-07-2009 The Hoplites have invaded further into the New World than we thought. It looks like we have friends in Brazil now : Ancient Battle Society [url:1n2yw02a]http://www.ancientbattlessociety.com/ Not that I'm counting! They can be contacted at Re: Show here your Greek warrior impression - John Conyard - 06-09-2009 I has a good day celebrating the completion of two new helmets, enjoying retsina and good Greek food. Hoplite - 06-09-2009 Hey! Congratulations there! Nice helmets. How do you define yourself? Cavalryman of the 4th century bc? Your thorax does remind me of the earlier styles. Close up photos? Khaire Giannis Re: Show here your Greek warrior impression - John Conyard - 06-09-2009 I normally define myself as a late Roman cavalryman of the Taifali from the 4th century A.D. But I'm lucky enough to get paid for dressing up <!-- ia1 CIMG5345.jpg<!-- ia1 [/attachment:2lhw6geb] I did have 4th century cavalry in mind in these shots. You will recognise much of the equipment recomended by Xenophon, such as the kopis, boots and boeotian helmet. But I was also thinking of Aristophanes mentioning an Athenian officer with a pilos helmet in his Lysistrata. I wore a thick heavy goat hair kilim because we wrote about them earlier in the thread. The spear and javelin were grabbed from the equipment room in haste. <!-- ia0 CIMG5341.jpg<!-- ia0 [/attachment:2lhw6geb] The thorax is the one I posted up in reply to you in the linothrorax thread. I suspect a copper alloy cuirass would have been more common, and I'm working on that. But I fear I prefer the short-waisted type common from the mid 4th century, since I believe it will be easier to get a good fit on both myself and others. Re: Show here your Greek warrior impression - Gaius Julius Caesar - 06-09-2009 Is that a Deepeeka Boeotian helmet? Re: Show here your Greek warrior impression - John Conyard - 06-09-2009 No. Would you like one.......... Re: Show here your Greek warrior impression - Giannis K. Hoplite - 06-09-2009 Yep,goat hair kilim exactly like those i saw in Istanbul, and the one i bought. I wanted a multicoloured like yours,to be resembling more the Thracian cloak, but for some reason i was stroke but that black one. Isn't it like wearing pins? Interestingly, your spear shafts are blue, exactly like the Aristion stele(which also show a yellow thorax) Khaire Giannis Re: Show here your Greek warrior impression - John Conyard - 06-09-2009 Thank you Giannis. The kilim was from Cesar last Febrary. It is incredibly warm. It kept me warn in a dog tent last March with frost all around me. I suspect it is a little like wearing a hair shirt. I'm sure I deserve it. I do like the Aristion stele, but the javelins are in fact a happy coincidence. They are remains of a kontos..... Re: Show here your Greek warrior impression - Gaius Julius Caesar - 06-09-2009 Quote:No. Would you like one.......... It certainly looks like a decent one, so possibly. I havent started my Greek equipment yet! Re: Show here your Greek warrior impression - hoplite14gr - 06-09-2009 Well done John! Kind regards |
