The UK is currently enjoying a heat wave. Today we enjoyed hotter temperatures than Greece.

I was lucky enough to enjoy a great day riding. Five of the next Comitatus shows will involve our cavalry and I was getting in some much needed practice. After both Murph and myself had spent an hour practicing horse archery unconvincingly, we had a break, an apple, and tried something completly different.

Luckily a lady was able to take some photos.

When I have a moment I'll start a thread on riding. But it was great fun for both of us. Murph adopted a stance of amused tollerance, as if this was all too easy for him. But he must have appreciated the lack of metal armour and saddle, and we spent a lot of time in the shade. On such a hot day I found the lack of clothing comfortable. The trot was fine and the canter much the same as normal. The first time we did a tight turn I was laughing out loud. My leg came up automatically to brace myself, but the horn, and the saddle, wasn't there. It was cumbersome carrying two long javelins compared to eleven smaller ones in a bucket behind my left leg. But it was kind of funny as well. And getting on and off the horse without a saddle was far easier.

It was a very special day.

Amen to all that. I think Xenophon would envy you your Murph, who looks to me heavy enough to crash through any number of opposing lines... Smile

Now I can't wait to get in the "saddle" again. I just got my second javelin head from Manning, so now I can enjoy the pains of riding with two.

Now...can we start planning a Greek deer hunt on horseback?

Murph is big, bad and belligerent. It's his third year of being a Roman, and this year he's fast as well. He has hidden depths, and tends to keep them hidden.

Dain I love your photos. I would like to know more about your kit and equipment.

I am under the impression that the Roman "Thraco-macedonian reserve" in Magnesia (191 B.C.) must have looked like that.

John Beck's already gone home, but there's the rest of us--ten hoplites, some slaves and some camp followers.

What none of us knew is that most of our shields don't show...we built a little ediface with the nine of them and only five show. Ouch!
