Re: Show here your Greek warrior impression - Giannis K. Hoplite - 08-04-2009

Tanks for the comments Idomenea, well, the chiton looks like this for all those reasons i guess. It's linen, and i would even prefer it softer linen than the one i used. The folds have been carefully placed and sewn but they ave to be somewat arranged every time i wear it again. And i wish i had a slave to help me arrange them but i usually don't. Finally the pattern plays a role as i have cut the bottom hem to produce the curves instead of pulling the chiton up.
I don't claim that this is necessarily how they were doing it but i think that it does look like the vases and sculptures. In fact, according to my research such identical chiton constructions existed, but for the sewing also in the waist, that i did for convenience (remember,no slaves) and that is not shown on unbelted chitons.

Last weekend we had our event at Heuneburg with a befriended Thracian Group and Some Celts. Here are some impressions. It was the best event so far, I have to admit :-) ) Let us know what you think.

Re: Show here your Greek warrior impression - Nearco - 08-24-2009

Cogratulations Kallimachos and kineas! I really love macedonian impressions Big Grin

I got some questions for you Kallimachos. We have done till now two prototypes of sarissa, but we still have problems because we used the same wood diameter than the dory and this combined with the weakness of linking sections makes that when we form a phalanx about half sarissa bends down, so we look like some kind of "impotent" hoplites  What diameter are you using on yours?

I have seen the pikes of the Tercio pikemen from the XVII century, and I couldn't tell exactly, but they have a really great diameter!

Another question is about the phalangite shield, you did it yourself? maybe the ring method would be good for doing one.

Thank you!

Re: Show here your Greek warrior impression - Perdiccas - 08-24-2009

@Nearco the shafts have a diameter of 40mm (around 1.6 inch). We had the same problems with our old shafts, which had 28mm (slightly above 1 inch). For the shields we bought blanks from a medieval merchant. They are built in the ring method and covered with linen. Additionaly we covered them with leather. The metal parts were made by various blacksmiths. After obtaining the parts we assembled the shields ourselves.

Re: Show here your Greek warrior impression - Nearco - 08-24-2009

Thank you very much Perdiccas Big Grin

For a 4 cm of diameter shaft longer metal linkers should be needed if we use the same lenght the link would become even more weak due to the weight  We need another prototype

Thanks!

Danke shoen mein freund!

I honoured to have been with the "haeteroi" the "trivalloi" and the "celts".

I am pleased to say that the members of both groups who endured me as their hoplomachos were fast lerners.
They mastered the basic phanax commands (in a language not their own must be noted) in 15 minutes!
Puts a lot of native Greeks to shame

Well done lads I am proud to have locked shield with you.

Kind regards
