Macedonian shield - Kallimachos - 09-17-2006
I got my Sarissa a few days ago from my blacksmith-

Iam sure I saw a Macedonian Shield on an Ebay Shop ( Not Auction ) , in fact I think there was more than One , I was looking under
" Greek shields " Worth a look Mate .

I do not think you will find what you are looking for commercially. Indeed I am making my own aspis this winter to complete my panoply.
If you are happy to go with something not quite authentic then look on google for "rareprops" - they are seeling a lot of stuff from Alexander and if you scroll through you will find a couple of Macedonian shields...not cheap though.

Kurt, we have a custom made "Makedonic pelta" but without the telamon (bauldric). Made from 18 gouge bronze.
The one that you present on the pics is probably an Indian variation rathe inaccurate in my opinion.
Why you chose the "leaf shaped" point for your sarrisa ?

The shield I present is awfull, forget it. I just posted it to ask Paul if he thought about taht kind of shield in his reply.
How did you made your Macedonic Pelta? And do you got some pics?
Actually I gave pics from the artefacts of Vergina, and from the Osprey book "Macedonian Warrior" to my blacksmith (well I send them via email, because he lives 400 km from my city. He has done a great job, but failed somehow at the details. Simple explanation my friend.

Well most pike points were thin narrow blades and some even conical.
I am still awaiting pics to post of our macedonian shield.
It was the project of a friend who is a metallurgist.

How big do you want it? I seem to recall you noted elsewhere that you are quite tall. Ikea were making wooden bowls from concentric strips. You can buy one of these, remove the circular stand and convert it to a pelte, assuming they have branches in Germany.

I've got two which are 45cms in diameter, but I'm told you can get them at 60cm.

The phallanx shield has a diameter of 60 top 70 cm and according to the Asklipiodotos & other sources he proposes 65 cm diameter. It constituted of a wooden core (leather or papyrus intermediary) and copper. Her cupreous version was the one that proposes and the Asklipiodotos and means that the cupreous investment was also best did not have cornice hoplite aspis even if it had porpax and handle-if it were also found in use only in the case where sarisa had been rendered useless - and aortiras (leather strap) that it was the means for the shift of shield. It was not very concave hence it did not have big depth in order to make it possible for the use the sarisa with two hands(only with two hands can sarisa be used). The biggest depth contrary to hoplite was 4 cm maximum.

I was just wondering: did the Greeks(and Macedons) size shield according to different heights(of the users), or was it a standard size that you used, regardless of how tall you were?
