It looks cool.

Unfortunately the trailer has already been removed at the request of Warner (Big) Brothers. Of course, it is there movie so they may do with it as they will.

Having not seen the trailer I can not comment on the final look of the film.

However...

Based upon the promotional footage shown in the Warner Bros booth at E3, I remain skeptical.

This promotional footage had the Spartans fighting without armor. :?

I know this is based upon a graphic novel and a very "stylized" re-telling of the story, but even so -- no armor (other than helmets & shields)?

Perhaps I am being too literal in my thinking and I will grant that the final film may differ drastically from what we saw at E3 so I will wait and see.

If someone finds the trailer again please post a link.

Yup, in underwear, cloak and helmet. Yes, I'm skeptical too - there seems to be much yelling and screaming, and what I could see looked more like LOTR than ancient Greece.

mmm, is this a movie and a computergame or only a computergame?

Thanks Daniel -- I should have known that YouTube would have it. (Although even there, many have already been removed.)

So, having seen it I do agree, it does look good. And it does look like, in some shots, that the Spartans are wearing armor, but then in others as if they are bare chested.

Perhaps, if this film does well, some studio will put up the money to film Gates of Fire. George Clooney had optioned the film rights to the book before it was published, but nothing has come of that and by now that option, unless renewed, has most likely expired.

The 300 will make for a fun popcorn afternoon, and might spark some interesting discussions, but in the end I do wish for more -- as is almost always the case the facts are far more fascinating than is the fiction.

Thanks again for the link Ebusitanus.

Well said Vortigern.

I think what gives me pause is that the story of Sparta and of the 300, is a great story -- so good in fact that no matter how much "stylization" you heap on its back the strangth of the story still peeks through. This is by no means the definitive version of the story, just as that old warhorse of a film "The 300 Spartans" was not. They are steps along the way to a really great film. Perhaps the next film will be it. Hope springs eternal.

Is this grand cinema or tremendous kitsch?

Re: 300 Trailer Leaked and is now online!!!! - tlclark - 09-22-2006

Neither, it's comic book art.

It was shot almost entirely against greenscreens like Sin City and "Sky Captain" so that they could completely control the look and style of the film. It's a triumph of formalism for sure, but that was my opinion of both of those movies as well.

After not wanting to see Sin City for a long time I decided to give it a go. I thought it was a great film, and I mean film. A wonderful adaptation of the graphic novel. I have my reservations about 300, simply because I'm not sure it gives credit to the Frank Miller graphic novel, which Sin City did so well. However, that trailer is not showing the final look (I was told tonight over beers, the movie is not finished). Fingers crossed.

Don't forget, the movie ain't a history lesson, it's meant to look something like [Image: 300_comic.jpg]

It's art.

Don't forget, Frank Miller changed Batman forever - and no, he had nothing to do with that film. But anyone who can turn the Batmobile into a tank deserves some serious consideration

If it is art, then it comes at times pretty dreary across:

"Are you mad?" "We are SPARTANS!!!"
"You can't win that battle." "We are SPARTANS!!!"
"What about your wifes and children?" "We are SPARTANS!!!"
"Do not forget your toothbrushes." "We are SPARTANS!!!"

Crossing my fingers too. Finally saw Sin City this year at the insistence of my 22 year old son. Enjoyed it for what it was. Not sure how well that sort of treatment will transfer to the ancient world... where I prefer significantly more reality in my cinema.
