Re: show off your gladius - Magnus - 02-21-2008

I just finally added some grooves to my gladius pommel and guard. I'd wanted grooves for like 6 years lol. Finally just said to heck with it, took a triangular file and wow...it was so easy i'm kicking myself for not doing it earlier. The lines on the pommel aren't quite even...but I may get a new ball soon anyway and drill out a hole with a drill press instead of by hand. Oh, and there is a single groove on the guard...just hard to see in this picture.
(Funny how dark linseed oil can make maple eh?)

If you don'have used, you can use the drill to make perfect grooves. Pass a big iron nail, put the nail in the drill's mouth, put on the drill motor and use the files to carve the grooves. It's an economic lathe.

Yeah, definately when I buy a new pommel for the sword...I had drilled the hole that's in there by hand and it was crooked...so when a friend tried the lathe the pommel was all over the place =)

Re: show off your gladius - Aetius Helvius Merula - 03-28-2008

Here's my Pompeii gladius. It started out as a regular Deepeeka 4211, with the hockey puck handle and square guard, neither of which I liked. I altered it, and with the exception of the finish, I'm happy with the results.

I made the scabbard from scratch. I was trying for something else but as this is my first try, I wound up with something else. Still seems like a 1st C Roman scabbard to me, so I'm happy.

Some pics of my Gladius, Used to be a bad original Deepeeka version. Matt L, turned it into a work of art in my opinion.

That is pretty nice!

Re: show off your gladius - arklore70 - 09-28-2008

Folks,
here are some pics of my new gladius. It is a Fulham pattern blade that was made for my Mark Morrow. It has a 320 satin finish to it. Its as sharp as my shaving razor currently.

The guard, guard plate, grip, pommel, and scabbard was all done by Matt Lukes. The two blank plates are silvered. In the making of all the brass pieces, Matt actually used a series of sand casting molds very similar to how we think it was done back then.

I added some linseed oil to help bring out the natural wood colors.

The guard plate has my name on it as well as that of my Centurio Big Grin

I think Matt and Mark really did a fantastic job with this and it is all very, very solidly made as well as having great balance. I really like my Albion blades ( which are pictured on a earlier post here), but this exceeds them in every way.

Matt and Mark were great to work with on this project, communicated beautifully, and you definitely are getting your money's worth and a whole lot more.

That was the post I was trying to make last night, but lost connection to RAT for some reason :? lol: ....anyways, Yes, an impressive collection of gladii!

Re: show off your gladius - griffin - 11-03-2008

Here's a picture of my recently re-finished Mainz Gladius.

It was a plain old deepeeka mainz. I tinned the plates and removed one of them, just to jazz it up a bit.

Re: show off your gladius - Gaius Julius Caesar - 11-03-2008

Nice work. Did you touch up the repouse work too? It looks sharper than the original I have anyway.
